Best type of Suger Cane to grow

If a family just wanted to grow some sugar cane for themselves, is there a variety that is best?

I've noticed a few houses with the purple type growing around them. This is the kind that the Hawaiians brought here as opposed to the types used for sugar production. I don't know if it's the best though.
