Best/most important 5 movies ever
#21
1. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari - 1920 German silent film. Sheer artistry for the time. Like a dream within a dream. A true classic that every student should know. I first watched this in my freshman year in college.

2. Dracula 1992 - Francis Ford Coppola - This was beautifully done. Cinematography, Acting, Script and Costumes were masterful.

3. Out Of Africa 1985 - Sydney Pollack - An intelligent, romantic epic of time and place (not to be mistaken for a "chick flick"). Both beautiful and well-written. True to the novel.

4. Dances With Wolves 1990 - Kevin Costner - One of the best Westerns I've ever watched. Another sweeping epic with a simple, clean story.

5. The Lord Of The Rings (Trilogy) - 2001 - Peter Jackson - For so many reasons I adore this collection. Jackson's interpretation of a series beloved by so many was spot on. These movies have a way of carrying me away to another dimension from the first frame.

Good luck with your project - it sounds like great fun!!

Queen of Outer Space - For really campy sci-fi, not necessarily the BEST movie, but fun. Zsa Zsa Gabor... "I hate that queen"!

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within - Maybe we'll be getting rid of actors one of these days?

Carol,

As a side note, you might want to expose the students to some decent movie critics and discussion.

"Filmspotting" is a podcast available via iTunes. Topnotch down-to-earth discussion of current movies and usually has a running historic theme. It might make an interesting homework assignment--to listen to a particular episode which discusses a currently popular movie that the kids have likely seen, to hear what intelligent movie discussion sounds like, so to speak.

And even if you just turned a few students onto the podcast--that would be worth it. Wink

Cheers,
Kirt

Hey, people in Hawai'i watch movies too! Besides, I've learned to only reply to "safe" subjects like this. So it's nice to see one occasionally.
