I am looking to rent YOUR car please? Hilo/Puna
#1
Hi There~

I am looking for a car to rent for the month of April. I am visiting my friend in Pahoa and doing a work/trade on her house. I'm looking for a safe reliable car to rent for the month! I have my own car insurance (Allstate full coverage), am a very responsible driver in CA, and a fastidious Virgo that is detail oriented and super respectful of property.

I am going through a lot, my best friend, my mom just passed..and I am trying to get to Hawaii to breathe in the healing air...and just "be" awhile. I plan on using the car just to see nature around the island. I am on a limited budget(hence work trade), so maybe we could work out a month total? Thanks so much...best.

I am sorry too, wish you the best!

Note on insurance: it follows the vehicle, not the driver. Whatever might happen would, I think, be on the vehicle owner's policy. That's true in California too. A friend of mine there loaned her car to an aunt for one day. Aunt was involved in an accident. My friend's insurance policy took the liability ...there were other cars involved. They also totaled out my friend's car because they didn't find it worthwhile to fix it. She had a well-maintained, low mileage, older model car, so she didn't get enough for it to buy a comparable car.

Even though you are a good driver, there are bad drivers around Pahoa. Whoever rents to you is risking quite a bit. You should both speak to your insurers and get clear on how it would work.

I had a long term guest in Hilo who worked with Enterprise. She didn't have the car all the time. Enterprise brings the car to you and picks it up.

Lauren, depending on where in Pahoa, the HeleOn county run FREE bus system may be a great assist on you vacation... link to the site:
http://www.heleonbus.org/schedules-and-maps

The Hilo/Keaukaha bus meshes nicely with the Pahoa route at the Prince Kuhio Mall for travel to the Hilo beach parks. If you want to take a bike on the bus bike racks it is $1 per ride. The only big problem is that the routes are slightly limiting (the HeleOn bus does not run on any private roads, and much of the island housing is in private subdivisions, do the bus is not convenient for those...)

Anyhoo, it is worth checking into, if the bus does run nearby, you can always rent a car for a couple of days to see the 'must see' things that are not on the bus route... (oh, you may be having a real hard time finding a car for April, because the Merrie Monarch Festival is the first week, after that, things like cars become a little more available.

Actually, my insurance follows me. I pay for coverage that allows me to drive a rental if I want and it is insured with the same coverage. I can drive my daughter's and it is insured with the same coverage. I specifically asked when I changed from Allstate to Geico and while the premium is a little higher it covers the vehicle I drive as well. I found out about it when I was with Allstate because I was renting cars for travel alot and one of Alamo's agents asked if I had insurance and told me to check with my agent to see if I had the kind that covered my rental if I was driving it. I did, and did not have the coverage. I purchased it and maintain it because when I travel I save money over the cost of paying for the rental insurance through the rental agency.

To Lauren: 'Be'ing here is great and very healing. Time, as they say, fades the raw pain and replaces it with fond memories. Mine passed away 24 years ago but it was like yesterday just without the raw pain. Being here, switching gears [pun intended] and taking in the 'spirit' that emanates from here will do you good. I hope you find what you need to meet your needs. Just being here will make a difference.

Critter lover, you may want to read your policy carefully. There are policies that cover you as a driver with no vehicle and almost all standard policies apply to you driving a rental car if it is a substitute for your own. Most of the time the policy for the vehicle is primary. Your own insurance is almost always secondary in the event the limits of the first policy are exhausted. I could go into much greater & more boring detail but I will save you of the hum-drumness of my occupation. I should also throw in the suggestion that your agent doesn't always understand the way a claim applies to a policy. That is why adjusters & agents have different state board testing & different continuing education classes. So always read everything and not just go by what the agent says.

I think it would be best to get a rental for the trip instead of borrowing a car. Try signing up for all of the rental companies frequent user programs & you get special rates. Also, the last minute deals on alamo's web site are awesome.

While your insurance might cover your rental car, it would only cover a rental car from a legit rent-a-car company, not a car you might be "rentig" from me as an individual.

My policy has a rider for "non-owned vehicles" which I understand to mean any car I am driving.
Assume the best and ask questions.
