The internet cafe used to be in old Pahoa when it first opened. I am sure the rent was cheaper and it seemed to be managed a bit better. When ever I stopped in at the new location for internet use it seemed disjointed and very difficult to get help for food or coffee. It does seem like Pahoa could support a well ran internet cafe.
I thought Kope Kope was going out of business. Atlanta/Pahoa

A Costco or Sam's Club would get my support whether in Puna or in Hilo....
Also a national pet store chain like Petco (like the one in Kona), Petsmart,or Petland would be nice here. Just about everyone here has pets...but the stores here are very limited in what they sell for pets...and what they do sell is 3 to 4 times the price what it's sold for in Kona.

I like coffee shops, with comfy chairs. Borders' chairs are always full, with people waiting. OTOH, people don't seem to spend a lot of money there while hanging out. Starbucks cllosed there because it brought in less revenue than the one by Jamba Juice. I also like delis. I don't like Subway. I used to love O'Keefe's sandwiches in Hilo, and would always go there for a treat. I'm really not a fan of plate lunches on regular basis. Too much grease. Island Naturals has sandwiches though.
My pet peeve is when the deli/sandwich place is out of fresh avo. Fresh avo is important! I'm sure there are other business needed, but I can't think of one at the moment.

The biggest problem with any business in Puna/Pahoa is that the people here don't want to spend ANY money. Period. End of story. Look through posts on this forum - people - even those with million $ homes, try to not spend a dime. They try to do everything themselves even if they fail at the results.

quote:I agree. But there's a good reason for that - almost non-existent jobs with almost half pay compare to the mainland(mostly due to 24-30 h a week "tradition" here). Add the 1.5-2 times more expensive groceries and other stuff - you do the math,Monty. With $6 for a loaf of bread and $3.50 for a dillweed you bet a lot of people will try to be self-sufficient. So the stuff that helps to be self-sufficient and can not be easily made at home -that what I'd look into. Farming and gardening. Pottery is expensive here. Dirt cheap -it's a joke.Soil is very expensive too . Cinder with all that lava rocks around is not particular affordable either. Mini green houses or raised beds? Tools for gardening and "home improvement".

Just as an aside, for pet owners, last year I occasioned a visit to PetCo. I was told they would be opening a store here in Hilo when Target opens. Now, I don't know if that has gotten press...don't know if the Target store is coming with a little strip mall too besides Safeway and PetCo has signed on...but that is what I was told.
