The story certainly has a ring of authenticity to it.

Hawaii needs all the federal dollars it can qualify for right now. Census results help determine where federal dollars are most needed. Many things like electricity per resident, road ways per neighborhood, police coverage are helped along by census figures. Cities use this data as well as states for ALL future plans, like it you don't know where you are going you will never get there. 10 questions and your annual salary isn't one of them.

Something tells me the bonehead resident had something going on that he didn't want anyone to see. Wouldn't be a big surprise in Puna.

Puna will suffer from dummies unclear on the concept of the census.

What is that concept? as far as the constitution reads (prior to the 14th and 16th amendments) The purpose of the "census" is: Representatives and direct Taxes shall be apportioned among the several States which may be included within this Union, according to their respective Numbers,

So now what is the purpose of the census? seems to me the purpose is to count us up to send people to washington to TAX us.

I love to read about how "We need our share of federal dollars" thats laughable. Those are our dollars to begin with, not to mention the money that comes from the Federal Government is born out debt, causing further inflation. I also suggest to all of you proponents of getting more federal money, take a look at this. http://www.taxfoundation.org/research/show/22685.html
Hawaii is a leech state, essentially stealing from others to pay for ourselves.

besides "enumuration" is sure a lot different than asking my name, my age, my race, my gender. When dealing with federal agents, the 4th amendment applies.

seems to me in this age of statistics, fico scores, google earth, gps, and zillow

The feds can get what they need in a more efficient less intrusive manner -

JD Powers could do it.... for less $$$ to boot

Perhaps you could update us regarding the 14th and 16 amendments regarding the census. Only referring to prior to the amendments you mention would seem to be looking at at less than the whole concept.

Yawn....

The Census data is used to determine how much money Hawaii gets from the US Governement for programs and services, plain and simple. You can't use total US money received because Hawaii has a large and very expensive military presence that cost big dollars. By your assumption, you might as well include Guam, Okinawa, Iraq, and every other place we spend money on for any expense. I bet Hawaii won't even be in the top 10%.

I guess I'm starting to understand why government and politicans could care less about Puna or what the people of the area want or needs.

We need accurate census data for the next redistricting effort - which is important. Puna should expect to have two full council seats in 2012. Past due. Instead we now have one full seat and two thumbnail positions - which weakens our representation. Those Puna boneheads that refuse the census prevent us from getting fair representation for our district.

I hope the Feds defend the census taker and consider charging the bonehead resident.

I think many really have no idea how the US Census count impacts their everyday life. Looking pass just federal items, states and local governments often depend on Census numbers to make representation and tax funding returns on local issues. Imagine the clout of the Puna District if every resident was counted!

Now, one question, is this latest conversation on the census worker arrest the same incident that started the thread? If so, the events seem to have changed big time.
