Borders Hilo Closing
#21
I am very sad to see Borders closing! I have a 14 week old and always made a stop at Borders when we were in town. Before she was born I started stocking up on books for her. She already has an extensive library, but can always use more! I think teaching a child to love books is so important at a young age.We go to the library very often as well, but it sure is great her having books of her own! We loaded up on clearance books yesterday. So sad to see Borders go! We will have another place to stop when visiting Kona now!Smile

Sad, there's just something about book stores that I enjoy...big and small. Borders was one of our usual stops while visiting the BI... I think it is a small piece of the mainland that attracts people to places like Borders.

Does anyone know what's up with Hilo Bay Books? They were supposed to reopen a while ago. Now would be the time, one would think.

To me, this could be welcome news. I hated it when the big chains opened and smaller stores were forced out of business. Maybe now, small stores with a knowledgeable and passionate owner will once again attempt business.

@KeaauRich: I'm sorry to see that Borders is closing, but I'm not surprised. In the past 6 weeks, I've visited 3 times to purchase best sellers and/or books that should be in stock there (like the Culture Shock Hawaii book someone here recommended). Borders never had anything I wanted in stock, but they were up to their eyeballs in discount cookbooks like "1001 Crockpot Meals." So the decision became "do I drive to Hilo and hope they have my book, or do I go online and know I'll have book in hand in a few days with free shipping?"

ME: Yep! That is why I stopped shopping, or rather not shopping, there. Every single book I have searched for this entire year was not available there. However, I have found them at Wal-Mart or CostCo. Since my library is full and I have no more room, I too have gone to digi-reading. Probably not as good for the eyes and harder for someone like me whose memory remembers 'where on a page' and 'where in the document' I read something...flipping pages digitally is somehow less tactile where memory queue is concerned...at least for me. But, Borders was great for a long time. Starbucks will be filled to overflowing with the folks who used to hang out at Border's deli.

There is a used book store in Hilo operated by Royce (hope I'm spelling that right) located on the first block of Keawe Street, just before Mamo Street. Royce sold books at the Makuu Market before opening this venture. He has a vast knowledge of books and good prices.

I was in Borders today and found a few books I would have wanted to purchase. But, the check-out line was crazy....at least 100 people winding around the store and the line never seemed to move during the ten or so minutes I was browsing around. Could not deal with it and left. I guess a lot of folks have found bargains there.

In the past, when I've been to stores having "going out of business/everything must go" sales, it seems all the good stuff has been moved to other locations that are not closing, all the "not as good" stuff has been marked up so it can be marked down to just about the regular price, and a whole bunch of new "clearance" stuff that never saw the inside of the closed store before suddenly appears from other sources. Is that the case at the Borders closing sale, or is it a real sale?

The selection looked pretty normal. They had tables labeled $5 and $10 but I didn't get around to looking on them. It looked like the bestseller non-fiction and fiction had what are the hardcover bestsellers right now. These were labeled 20% and 30% off. Not great discounts on these, but there were a couple of books I was wanting to buy anyway still on the shelves. Hard to say what else was on the shelves around the store....I just wanted to scream or get out of there! I supressed the scream and walked out the door!

The prices were not great. Just about everything in there on sale could be obtained on Amazon.com for the same price or lower.
