Just a FYI post...
I had understood that DOE, Lingle, HSTA, etc had found a way out of furloughing school days, but I guess that is not the case.
Cheers,

From a recent email from the _lovely_ teacher's union:
SCHOOL CALENDAR
The official 10-month teacher and 12-month teacher calendars are posted on the DOE Web site hawaiidoe.org.
We experienced many twists and turns in media coverage over the last year that created confusion for everyone. To clarify: as part of our agreement with the BOE, a full academic year is provided for students. In order to provide this, teachers will continue to take some furlough days.
We hope this past year has refocused everyone in the community on the need to give our students and their schools the priority they deserve. Please thank parents and families for their support.
Teacher furlough days are noted on the calendars posted on the DOE Web site. Teachers do not report to work on furlough days.
As per the DOE Calendar:
*10-month teachers (6 furlough days)
July 29, 30; Oct. 11; Dec. 17: and, Mar.11, 28
*For 10-month teachers, the reduction in teacher pay will be approximately 2.8% (equivalent
to 6 furlough days) rather than the 7.94% reduction for the 17 furlough days last year. A calculator is available on the DOE Web site, hawaiidoe.org.
12-month teachers (10 furlough days)
July 29, 30; Oct. 8, 11; Dec. 17; Mar. 11, 18, 28; and, June 17, 24
Calendar notes:
-The calendars apply to all schools except those on multi-track schedules or charter schools.
-There will be NO Teacher Institute Day this year. However, dates will be announced for one informational meeting per semester instead. Please watch for details on dates, times, and meeting locations.
-The student instructional year starts on August 2, 2010 and ends on May 26, 2011.
