Woodland Center opening
#11
It was fun. Of course, it was a bit of a circus, but that's spot-on for an opening. I got the hairbrush I wanted and several cans of soup, pasta, etc.

I think it's nice we have a Long's here!

My wife thought it was almost like going to Makuu Market.
Ran into all kinds of friends.

There was some big accident at the corner somewhere about 4- 4:30 PMish. Shelly at Puna Pharmacy was telling me about it - the PD and clean up was still going on when I stopped in to PP at 5:45 PM.

It was interesting that Malama Market was noticeably quiet and rather empty this afternoon. Maybe long's will have a positive effect on the high prices at Malama Market....

I stopped by too. Got right into a parking spot and was back in the truck and gone it less than 15 minutes. I don't shop Longs in Hilo except as a last resort for some obscure item and after seeing the prices I figure it is going to be the same for the Pahoa Longs. Oh well, life goes on.

So much for the boycott.

I was at Malama Market yesterday at about 3:30. The cars waiting to leave the parking lot were backed up to the front of Malama Market! This was before the accident. It took 10 minutes to get out of there.

Later while coming out of Hawaiian Beaches on Kahakai, I looked over and saw the police, fire and ambulance at the scene of the large accident. Then a guy pulled out of the new Woodland Center exit to go down Kahakai toward Hawaiian Beaches. While trying to simultaneously pull out, cross 130 traffic and get into that short left turn lane to head down Kahakai, he slid sideways into the northbound 130 lane. Fortunately noone was coming. I predict this will be the site of many more accidents.

I think whoever designed and approved this mess should be criminally responsible for the increased rate of accidents that is likely to occur at what was already the most dangerous intersection in the state.

All it takes to push things through quickly here is to grease a few palms. I'm sure that's what happened here...otherwise this intersection would have never been approved. I don't think they realized just how many people will be using this store. And just wait until the food satellites open in another month!

I just came back from shopping at the Pahoa Longs. It's a beautiful looking store. Very spacious as others have said, very friendly people working there (some you may recognize from Hilo stores). A very large Pharmacy and a good selection of things that you would typically find at any Longs store. They seem to have matched the Hilo prices on just about everything including the alcohol (which is good because Malama's alcohol prices were way out of line). They also had a very small fresh fruit section which is new (sliced watermelon, cantalope and honeydew) along with grapes and apples. And a little bit larger bread selection than the two Hilo stores. No problem with parking.
