Metal Roofing
#1
Anyone know the place near Komohana in Hilo where they sold used roofing? Or anyone know where I can get some used roofing? I'm watching Craigslist, but none there right now.

I think the "used roofing guy" (on Komohana) has moved on. Unfortunate.

There is some waste at HPM in Shipman when they roll-form roof panels. Changing a color or shape, and at the end of a roll, leaves leftovers of something less than 10' long pieces. It's a pretty good discount from new prices but they may be a mix of colors. You can stop by and see what they have.

I dont know if its what you want but there is some plastic corrugated roofing at Home Depot (back right corner of store), and its fairly cheep overall and comes in a few colors and clear and tinted. Ive used if for a greenhouse and it is easy to work with (since they must be screwed into the low spots its best to use the special screws w/gasket sold in same spot as the roofing, and those wavy tan plastic support things they screw into).

Home Despot sells two kinds of plastic roofing:

the cheaper stuff is PVC, will turn brittle after years in the sun, but happens to match the pattern of old-style metal roofing, so you can make skylights (if not being inspected; the plastic won't pass fire code)

the more expensive kind is polycarbonate, much better longevity, but not compatible with other roofing styles, however it's available (by special order) in a wide range of colors

Beware: some of the "special" screws (stocked in the back corner with the roofing) are zinc-plated and will rust -- spend the extra money on "real" roofing screws.

Not sure if the HD panels are significantly different, but with the Palram skylight corrugated panels from HPM, roof applications of the Sunsky & Palruf panels MUST be fastened with fasteners on the CROWN of the ridge in order to comply with the manufacturers installation... So be very careful that you comply with the proper installation for your panel system...

Thanks for the suggestions. I need sturdy metal for sides of a raised bed. 2' x 12' or more. 4 pieces.

Just noticed the "waterfall" house N of Lanikula on Kinoole (or Kilaeua???) had a new roof put on & has a stack out front by the street -

Also check with the guys at Keaau Transfer Resale....sometimes they can even "encourage" a donation from a metal scrapper...esp if they know they will only have it a short time...
