first of all, want to tell blake how sorry to hear about the loss of a friend. didn't know him but it is never a good thing to lose someone.
we are finally in our house, and trying get info about security systems, any advise as who is best. apparently it's something we need to worry about. do we just not have anything worth taking or protect what we have? not really a big fan of having packs of dogs running around to deter trespassers. or have call police after we have shot them.
any suggestions would be greatly appreciated

I use honywell / ademco vista series alarm system and monitoring by security tech.
As well as a set of IP cameras covering the drive up and house. They have motion detectors built in & take 6 photos 5 seconds apart when triggered then send the photos to my email... (foscam)
Pre wire-ing the alarm before the drywall went up made for a clean install, trips on each window, a set of motion detectors covering every room as well heat rise sensors, seamless and just about invisible if installed during construction
I am thinking about adding a few geese down in the southern part of the lot for intrusion warning when the alarm is disabled when I am out on the lot tinkering
hope this helps

Guess we subscribe to the pack of dogs method now that we have six LOL

IP cameras are kinda cool, but what if the thief cuts your power, or phone/cable? They won't record anything.

you get a nice photo the of cutting of said wire if the cameras are positioned well, foscams have a wireless access
using ip forwarding emails are sent from the router, no computer required
the alarm has a cell pnone back up - cut the phone line - I have a photo - and the dispatcher has been sent the "phone cord cut" code
everything has internal power back up
this is really cool stuff - come a long way from my first install....
