Mac Nut Cracker

Does anyone have a good design for a home made mac nut cracker? My tree's loaded but I have been unable to crack them open them and it's also also hard to pick out the meat. Any tips greatly appreciated.

If you're a handyman, you could try to copy this. It's the turning action that does it.
make sure the nut has a groove to sit in.
On the shell of each nut you see a white dot, that has to go at the top.

Big vice grips or a bench vice works for us. There is a lever cam action mac nut cracker which works good, but it's expensive. The commercial folks just came up with a pneumatic cracker last year, I think it was.

Maude, we couldn't find a talented birds, & went through all of the vice grips, screw type crackers & such, finally broke down & bought a heavy duty cracker that has a lever arm & heavy jaws & a nice box to limit the zinging shells

Here is a link for the commercially made lever-action type. They are moderately expensive but compact, efficient, and I wonder if a similarly compact unit could be made from scratch for much less once all the parts and fabrication involved are taken into account.

At this website it lists a source in Hawaii; you can also buy them at the little hardware store in Captain Cook (if the nutcrackers are not sold out -they only keep a couple on the shelf).

When I saw the heading, I expected a topic about a local production of The Nutcracker -- you know, with local "flavor." Seriously, I expected a topic about a ballet. []

The nutcracker we have is the one AlohaSteven posted, and we got it in Capt. Cook!

AND the Nutcracker BALLET is coming up at the Palace...12/10&11 7pm & the afternoon of the 13th.

You can make one with a piece of 4x6 and a couple of 1x2s.
Nail the 1x2s to the 4x6 in a v shape with one end just smaller than a mac nut and the other end wide enough to be able to slide the mac nut down the v.
All you need to do is wedge the mac nut in the v. The nut should protrude just above the 1x2s and hit it with a hammer.
