Volcano for visitors daytrip?
#11
Yep make them get out of the car and walk a bit cause the park can't be experienced from the car.
If they are lazy then def. take them to Visitor Center, Art Center, short suflur banks walk, Jaggar Museum, Thurston Lava tube (bring flashlights and go all the way back), and def. the Petroglyph trai. If weather and conditions are right head back to Jaggar Museum at sundown to see if you can see evening glow from Halema Crater. If you find yourself w/ tons of time left over maybe go as far west as Black Sand Beach.

MDD...

I wasn't seriously suggesting taking the teens to Kehena - just joking that if the teens needed incentive to hike, promising them the opportunity to see naked people would probably get them moving. And while I haven't taken a survey lately, I'm not sure your statement that it's "mostly populated by gay men" is accurate these days. Every time I go, it's a pretty mixed crowd (which I award a [Smile] even tho I'm a gay man). And in all the years I've been there, I've never seen anything sexually untoward occurring.

KeaauRich - I could have chosen better words. [Big Grin]
Didn't mean any slight, just to be careful since they are teenagers and the parents might be upset if they went there and were not aware beforehand.

KathyH, I have tried to email you through puna web and you didn't respond to another thread about west side beaches. Not sure if you are getting my emails? Will try again.
Thanks.

When we lived by Kehena what I observed there was that the weekdays were very tame with fairly ittle nudity and open drug use, and the weekdays attracted big crowds with more of everything. That can be a dangerous beach at times, be very careful when getting out of the water especially, those waves can flatten you from behind.

The recent death at the Verna's beach was a very experienced boogie boarder who went in there often, I don't think it is swimmer safe at this time. As more black sand is deposited by the lava ocean entry that may change.

Sorry, that is the one across fro the Kalapana Village Cafe (formerly Verna's drive in). In Hawaii directions are often given based on what used to be there, as in "turn right where that big mango tree used to be".

MDD...no offense taken. I was there today, BTW, and the crowd was mostly (like 90%) mixed-sex couples. Mondays tend to be "gay days" at Kehena, the rest of the time during the week, it's a mixed cxrowd. Weekends, it tends to be more families with kids, and the Sunday drum circle tradition brings out the, er, "eclectic" demographic Smile

And Carol, you are so right about the dangers of swimming at both Kehena and Verna's... waves and currents can be unpredictable, and I've seen numerous folks sucked out to sea (who were fortunately rescued by local swimmers exuipped with a surf board and tow rope). I'm 6'6, 200+ pounds (we'll leave it there...), and even I've been swept off my feet by wave backwash while standing on the shore.

When they see the Kilauea Iki crater, and see that they can actually go down there, they may decide a hike is worth it!

I would never advise swimming at the Kalapana beach and I am leary of the water at Kehena also. They are both options for sinking toes into black sand though.
