Punaweb and Poe's Law
#21
I don't know about the realtors but they better have the right pedigree because Nazi might get really upset and sue JR for defamation of character.

Don't know how to apply the Poe law.

I do not like a situation where members discuss someone who is not available to defend themselves. So I would ask our membership to not tread down that road. If you want to get into it with Mr. Lackey please go to another site to do so.

Assume the best and ask questions.

So will all the people who continued to post and throw fuel on the fire continually be removed from Punaweb also? All those who even after they knew what they could be getting into with a controversial thread, continued to fire back day after day instead of maybe taking a higher road? I mean, with all these intellectual folk who know something about everything, you know who you are, one would think they could bite their tongue. But no. They are the ones who kept the ball rolling. What will their punishment be? Oh. It is a one sided thing. Ahhhh. Got it. Only a one side to every story kinda crowd huh?

Well, thats 1 down. Gotta love the statement by Rob about how the Operating Committee will comment no further on this subject, (A certain persons removal from Punaweb) and is followed by, Assume the best and ask questions. Classic!!! I think a detailed explanation on what was done to cause this would have been a fair thing but we all know without it being said. Continue to have opposing views of the Punaweb clan and yourrrrrrrr out!

No, under normal circumstances I don't think Tom should be treated softly. But if someone, even if I have differences with that person, is going through a family crisis I don't think its a good time to tease.

I applied this standard to myself only, and only noted the edit in case someone (even Tom) had read my smartass (which was pretty tame) remark. I remembered his wife's health after posting and basically made a "not cool" judgment call and withdrew the comment.

Think it had more to do with the insult grenades being lobbed. God, I get sick of the "victim syndrome" whining.

Of course you can express your point of view. Insults and threats are another thing.

I just glanced at the "stats" section to notice over 2000 registered members, and 1000's of topics discussed. Most here appreciate the diverse contribution ideas and topics.

I know of only three people 86'd in several years. Two of them pretty much stated eviction was a personal goal of theirs, and proceeded to see how long they could last while promoting discord. The other was the human equivalent of spam whose main motivation seemed to be how fast he could reach 3000 posts.

It's easy to hint at "censorship", but I wouldn't have any problem throwing someone out of my home who was confrontational, vulgar and/or rude. Especially if that's the reason they came over.

There are Bars for that kind of entertainment, but even they have limits.

I wish all the punaweb expats the best and am happy they have a venue of their own to gather.

Fair enough, but I also notice that the links in Tom's punaweb posts to his own website have been removed and he's said he'd post stuff there without censorship, so just be aware everyone that his posts have been altered.

The problem with Poe's law is that everyone must be willing to accept it and abide by it.

For instance how many times have we seen someone here tell a joke and follows up with the smilies informing all who read it that it is a joke. But someone decides that they are offended by it and claims it not a joke because it is offensive. Or how about the person who decides to ignore the smilies and just comes right out and says they don't think it is a joke for whatever reason?

These people are not abiding by Poe's law. Don't get me wrong, I am not saying that one cannot be offended or not find a joke funny. What I am saying is that if we accept Poe's law and agree to abide by it then something that someone specifies as a joke must be accepted as a joke. No matter how offensive or bad the joke might be?

There are such things as offensive jokes and bad jokes. So if one intends something as a joke isn't it the responsibility of the person reading the joke to accept it as such if they agree to Poe's law? No matter how offensive they find it?

Just a thought.... [Smile][Smile][Smile]

But, what if the message comment posted relating to Puna or Hawaii was just a way to insert the off colored, offensive or disgusting joke which was the real point of the post?

If I ask how to tell the difference in Puna's guava, but tell a joke about niggers and spics, kikes and japs, fags and liberals that are too stupid to know when its ripe; if there are a whole bunch of [Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin] afterwards, do we ignore the fact that the joke was the intended message and the poster could care less about varieties of guava?

We know what and why some post were made, and many know when the joke was not meant as a joke despite all the [Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin][Big Grin] afterwards.
