I noticed the article does not mention how many additional people they will hire - only that it will employ about 200. How many already work in the current Safeway?

Hopefully the management will be better and better store service and stocked better to competer w/ KTA. A Target next to it would be nice

I'm jazzed about it. I really like Safeway 'cause their prices are better than some other supermarkets and they have really good meat. It would be nice to see the shelves stocked better for the weekly sale items...they run out too fast. My friend in the bakery has been with them for several years and they're really looking forward to the new digs.

I'd prefer to patronize one of the new real bakeries honestly and I too have a friend who works at Safeway bakery, except for their french and sourdough breads that if you go in the afternoon they have just baked! Their Bday cakes are terribly pedestrian. (yes said with my nose in the air, in case any one wondered![8)] But then I spent years under the tutelage of Miss Sonia - although none of the skills sunk in, the tasting did!)

Overall when safe way moves unless I am going to Tar-jay - it will be whomever has the best sale prices. I will no longer have any loyalty!

Safeway's prices have been creeping up, and we also already switched Pharmacies from Safeway to John's Puna Pharmacy for much lower pricing than Safeway, Walmart, or Longs more than a yr ago.

On their meat, when they went from using Grading system to that rancher's reserve, and Robert says its not very good now, and I agree. I believe the term he specifically compared it to "range-beef" in a most dismissive or derogatory tone as only one who comes from cattle country can!

IMHO only - No FF miles, no HFS next door, no savings, no beef....No Kapohocat.

I believe you Cat about the meat, but I don't buy meat so that's not a factor for me.
Are any of the new bakeries in Hilo? I like bakeries. I miss O'Keefe & Sons, sniff.

I like a clean grocery store that smells good. My sense of smell is really acute. Old Safeway has been the winner of that in Hilo, and new Safeway should be awesome.

I think that Safeway's every day pricing has gone down in the last year. I also signed up for the personalized shopping coupons. They track things that I buy frequently, and they give me electronic coupons to get those items at a lower price with my club card. Like if I buy a certain bakery item, they knock down the price and the computer picks it up automatically.

Unlike with regular coupons, it works even if I don't remember that the discount is there.

I am with you 100% that it sucks they discontinued the United miles! [!]

I have yet to find any other store in Hilo that has their people ask you if you are finding everything...or when you can't find something on the shelves, they actually go back to look!

In my opinion, Safeway has the BEST service in town.
