Lava viewing from public viewing area

Has anyone been to the public viewing area at Kalapana lately? Have our son visiting and want to take him to view the lava flow there. Mahalo Dick

I haven't been down lately, but follow Leigh Hilbert's photoblog for the latest skinny on the flow.

I noticed in today's Big Island Journal that there's going to be a music happening down at Uncle Roberts on Saturday night at 7:00PM. If your friends are here then it should be a good show and a great peek at our local culture.

According to the HVO folks the flow is about .5 miles from the barricades at the end of the road, no ocean entry, but lots of action on the pali.
Daily reports go up here, the webcams are my favorite form of cheap night time thrills.

There is some fantastic viewing at HVNP. Halemaumau crater activity from the Jagger museum, for instance.

To clarify though, The best "ocean entry and flowing lava" viewing is from the kalapana side of the flow. The official viewing area there will put you within a half mile(+/-) from active lava and eventually another ocean entry.

Uncle Roberts is at the end of the road where the famous Kaimu black sand beach used to be. Just get to the area and ask someone for more specific directions. You're close.

That's what I meant to say.My daughter was here last month and went to the park after the entrance station closed to view Halemaumau crater.

She said it was great.

We were at the Kalapana viewing area last Saturday with friends. At that time a nice view of glowing lava was visible in the distance According to Leigh's web blog the lava is now closer to the end of the road. The viewing of the crater behind Jagger museum was also quite spectacular after dark.

We were at Jagger last night, and it was spectacular. The pit in the floor of Halemaumau was visibly bigger than when we last went two weeks ago. Although there were occasional passing low clouds and fog that obscured it, there were clear spells when the vent was glowing so brightly that the cliffs behind it were lighted up like the wall of an open fireplace. The real treat for me, however, was the sound. We could hear the lava sloshing back and forth in the pit, and it sometimes sounded like muffled thunder, althought there were no explosions while we were there. Another amazing evening at Kilauea!
