Sometimes in my world it is better, to quote my mother, "ignore them and they will stop, keep in the game and it goes on". I told you this same thing about Tom on the phone that day, and now that you quit playing his game, and you took away his fun, his cartoons are moving back to primarily political ones. This is a reason why giving someone the "cold shoulder", or "ignoring someone" pushes their buttons not yours.

I am also bright enough to realize:

A. there are people in this world that best you can do is be cordial to them, but not for one instant do you turn your back on them.

B. Never gonna please all the people all the time.

C. I can not control the world. Wish I could and I'd cut taxes today. We got some real power and control junkies out there.

D. Death and taxes are the only two constants.


Of the posters over "there", I have not been personally attacked once. Not once. In that same time period here, it has happened numerous times here lately for pretty much innocuous comments.

I will never post on a forum that uses IP information the way Puna online's moderators do, but I also do not come on Punaweb and complain about people here not responding the way I think they should to posts on POL. It just isn't appropriate and is basically eavesdropping and then gossiping about what is heard. Either become part of the conversation where it is happening, or ignore it, but don't bring it to the Punaweb table to stink the place up.

Orchidland Guy has made thread after thread go sideways and ugly by relentlessly badgering people he disagrees with. He has used the phrase "calling out" time and time again, and even the most innocent post gets picked apart point by point repeatedly unless the original poster bows down to his superior wisdom or just fades away; and now he wants to lurk over on POL and snark about posts made over there, here on Punaweb.

Just let Punaweb be Punaweb, and either join in at POL or ignore it, but do not bring mud from POL over here to start slinging. That place is a whole different world, different styles of interaction are the norm, and taking out of context comments over there and berating people for not "calling" other POL members on their comments made on that site, is absurd, and yes, hypocritical.

Well, I would hardly call it eavesdropping on anyone's part, here, there, wherever.
Whatever is said on the net is a publication.
Eavesdropping would be to hack into a private group.

There are many people who read Punaweb without posting or even registering, but surely you would not call them eavesdroppers because they choose to read and not post?

I would call them lurkers.


Lurking is when somebody hangs out on Internet bulletin boards, chat rooms and Usenet groups (an Internet discussion system) without posting. Lurking can be a good way to learn about the topics being discussed and figure out the rules of a bulletin board before posting. However, lurkers in chat rooms may eavesdrop on your... conversations without ... ever knowing they are there.

I know what lurkers are, and I considered using that word, but it's kind of a negative term.
There is interesting stuff on both forums that is not personal chitchat, and not the same stuff, like different newspapers.

The chat room analogy doesn't hold up. Unless chat room transcripts are published, that conversation is only heard by those in the room.

Posting on a message board is a publication, as I've been reminded numerous times by others. The idea that you're in a small room with a few of your friends is an illusion.

If that's what people want, and don't want to be noticed, then there are group emails, private groups, private forums, etc..

I've belonged to and helped moderate one private board for years (nothing to do with Hawai'i). All you have to do is change the forum permissions so that only members can read them and it's private. There are plenty of forums that are members only participation and cannot be viewed without a password and username. Sometimes the membership is large but the criteria for joining is selective, like the MENSA forums.

If the board allows the forum to be viewed by anyone, then that is saying that people are welcome to look.
