Pet Mover... Or Cargo Service??
#1
Aloha! We are finally making the move. Whew. It's been two years in the process-- but we finally get to live in our Hawaii home. YAY!

Wondering if anyone knows of a cargo service that is cheaper than the airlines to ship our dogs to Hilo from the mainland? (PDX to ITO)

Alaska wants $975 per dog (they are beagles and a Chihuahua-- nothing big.) But their airfare is SO much cheaper than Hawaiian.

However, Hawaiian only wants $225 per dog to ship them. (I know-- we'll probably just end up flying Hawaiian. lol)

Wishing we could ship the dogs Hawaiian, and we fly Alaska. (which spawned the idea to ask all of you)

So, we're just wondering if anyone knows of a self service type of place-- where I can call and make the reservations myself for my dogs.

OK... maybe I am a cheapskate. LOL. But today-- we have to save every penny we can.

Mahalo for all the great info you all put on here each week. We've followed your loves, laughs, and concerns with bated breath. Can hardly wait to get there. =)

continental had a animal only shipment, climate controlled, one of the only ways to travel during the summer months. i think they were bought out by united? once i shipped this way was pretty easy, once you found cargo at the airport. i wasnt on the same flight. worth a call to see.

I second the Continental recommendation. They are climate controlled and a very good reputation in the commercial training and breeder circles.

Most airlines don't even let you ship animals in the summer because of heat issues.

I've shipped animals to and from Hawaii a few times, used United. Personally, I always fly on the same flight as the animals (even if it meant extra work to find the best airfare for me AND them or sucking it up & paying more than the cheapest possible flight). There is so much that can go wrong with flight delays etc. and the animals are already stressed out, adding time in the heat due to delays, etc. wouldn't be good.

Am assuming the dogs have gone thru all the steps for quarintine? That process has to start a few months before they get on a plane.....or else they'll have a nice visit in Honolulu for a while.....

Off the wall idea but have you checked into a cruise over and if they will take a pet?

I am thinking not but wouldnt hurt to check - 12 day cruise from Vancouver to HNL is $1000.

We shipped our pets direct to Kona. That was the only place on BI that could take them. The animals must go from mainland direct to the place of release. You can not have them land at Honolulu and get transferred to a flight to Hilo. You have read all the fine print on the county ag site? http://hawaii.gov/hdoa/ai/aqs/info/?searchterm=None In April we paid $250 per pet on United from Seattle to Kona. We transferred at SFO, so for the ag dept SFO to Kona with the proper paperwork was no problem. At that time, only United was shipping pets, and the owner had to be on the flight. (April of this year) The Kona vet who meets the flights is very helpful, and I have already forgotten her name, but is listed in the Ag info because the vet here has to have the info and agree to meet and check the animal. She also helped us fill out the paperwork. Do exactly like she says. We had no problems except the extra security check at Sea-Tac. The had us take out each cat from the carrier in the middle of the terminal. If they had got loose, we would have never seen them again. We had a rough landing and the dog had a skinned nose, but all were otherwise just fine from the long day.

Life goes on, with you or without you.
Peace and long life

Shipped 5 animals from Alaska to Hilo through honolulu. Had to clear quarantine, so remember to get your rabies tiders done at least 90 days out.

Just shipped a 20# kennel from koa to fai for $189 this afternoon.
