A young California man was washed of the cliffs in HPP and was rescued by the fire department. He was taken to Hilo Hospital in critical condition. I hope he recovers.

Wow. I was along the cliffs at that time yesterday but down further towards Makuu. I didn't notice any helicopter rescue

The Big Island rescue squad was quite busy yesterday with the HPP cliff incident and two others:

Anyone know where the young man was washed off the cliff, exactly? I am starting to think that homeowner's in the area should keep a life preserver or two at the ready, although it may not have helped this young man. I hope he is okay.

Kelena, That's a good idea as long as a life ring isn't stolen.

Unfortunately, he didn't make it:

Sadly, another reminder to never take your eyes off of the water and to stay back from the edge of the cliffs.

Article says he was climbing on the cliff. At least it makes more sense to me since I imagine it would take quite a wave to wash someone away who standing at the top.

Sounds like something I would have done at 20 something. Now I'm 50 something and when I look back at some choices I made I feel lucky to be here on Puna Web sharing thoughts. Even in 2005 I ventured too far and almost got done in. Thankful that my son was around!
