Worst Helicopter Flyover YET.

Support and vote for representatives that will legalize marijuana, especially at the national/federal level.

I have written a document that helps identify different helicopters, and the missions or operations they're doing:
http://www.wayforward.net/Helicopters.pdf

The DEA was flying low-level missions over Puna yesterday, two helicopters. I heard them on the radio, at 500 and 800 feet MSL, must have been much lower above ground level.

The Pu'u O'o vent is very interesting to fly over, there's a lava lake growing inside the crater, and the tour companies are taking advantage of it. It's spectacular.

Disclosure: I occasionally fly tours over the volcano myself. In an airplane, not in a helicopter. I don't think I'm bothering anyone, because I'm at least 1500 feet above ground when I'm passing over neighborhoods and houses. I get angry phone calls, even when I'm not flying. I ignore them.

Aloha, and hope you are well,
T.

Thanks terry, very informative. I saw the silver one this morning flying low and slow close to Pohoiki. I just saw the yellow and another one flying in formation over HPP. Looks like they were going back to Hilo for refueling and lunch.

And all over Eden Roc this morning. First real low ones that we have noticed. Helicopter had a red stripe. Cory thought coast guard. (?)

The Coast Guard and Helco were just up at Black Sands looking for missing boaters and damaged power lines. All they seemed to find was a very small amount of vegetative matter. Heroic and relentless; the search continues.

Ah yes, the "War on Drugs" continues despite Obama's campaign promises.
If you want "hope and change", vote third party.
We see the effect of Obama's policy here in Puna. Lovely.

Don't need a third party.

Presidential candidate Ron Paul's stance on marijuana.

Wayforward Aviation. It's just me and my plane. I do flight instruction and occasional tours.

I recently started flying for Big Island Air, they fly tours with a big single-engine Caravan. They (I should start saying "we") have a pretty strong commitment to safety and noise avoidance.

The tour helicopter companies have this commitment as well. I know Hawaiian Acres/Helicopter Acres gets upset because the helicopters and airplanes are relentlessly going overhead on their way from the Hilo airport to the Pu'u O'o vent.

But the tours create noise that is nothing compared to the disturbance created by the DEA helicopters.

Look: I"m on a drug-testing program. I'm a pilot! I don't smoke. Pilots and brain surgeons should be sober. But I fully support legalization. Somehow alcohol is legal, and that definitely kills tens of thousands a year, but pot is illegal. Huh.

It's the safety aspect which bothers me the most. Hovering helicopters have a "coffin corner" - an altitude range that they CANNOT recover from if their engine quits. Single-engine helicopters have absolutely no business hovering over people's houses. It is illegal.

Aloha, and hope you are well,
T.

Right about Ron Paul, but will the Repulsican leadership and the lapdog media give him the time of day? A third party run may be America's only non-controlled option.
