you can land in either honolulu or kona, both have ag stations, both can do direct release, but kona has additional requirements you must follow and pay the vet there additional i believe. i think with kona you have to know your flight 30 days out and with honolulu that is not the case. if you have questions it is best to call honolulu they are very kind and helpful with your questions. yes, it is getting hotter climate wise so you might have to use only the climate controlled pet carriers which at one time was only continental. you are not allowed to handle your pet at all once they are in control by the airlines, the airlines will see them directly to the ag station, you cannot take them yourselves. and i have shipped pets while not on the flight so am not sure why someone gave you that information.

Yes I've done the titers. And it's actually 120 day quarantine. You have REALLY read all clauses because someone didn't write a clear and concise step by step instruction on how to get your pet to Hi. LOL.... But it's all good. I think we've decided to just go Hawaiian.
Cost be darned... we can't see how saving money and adding headache is that worth it. lol...

The best person to get the most up to date info on Big Island animal importation is DR. Scartier DVM and can be reached through the animal quarantine station in Kona or try 808-345-2400. She is extremely helpful with everything you will need to know,,, Do NOT pay anyone trying to charge you money for help/info/etc on moving your beloved pets unless the details are too much for you. All it takes is some advanced careful planing, a VET that knows about moving a pet to Hawaii and attention to detail. Good Luck, hope this helps someone. Take Care & Peace, Mr.Natural

Alright. I need to arrive in Hawaii before my dog so I can get the place ready for her (you know, fluff up pillows, hide treats, put up fence). This means she must fly cargo from Southern California to KOA. Any idea who flies pets cargo from Southern California to KOA? I considered going through HNL. But nah. I don't want to put my girl on two planes.

Delta was having so many problems at one point fairly recently that they stopped hauling pets for a while. They may have reformed, but the reputation lingers. I would get some recent data before using Delta, and they're my former home town airline.

Alright, this has turned out to be quite difficult. I will be on island before my dog can enter the state. Consequently, she will need to arrive as "cargo". For those who haven't had the pleasure, there is no distinction between a dog arriving as "cargo" and a dog arriving as checked baggage: they are both on the same airplane. However, if you are not traveling with the pet, they go as cargo.
I want to fly my dog direct from Los Angeles or San Diego to Kona, but have run into some logistical problems:
1. United states that do not fly pets to Kona as cargo.
2. Alaska claims not to fly pets to Kona as cargo.
3. Delta does fly pets to Kona as cargo, but will not take reservations until 14 days prior to departure (Hawaii Ag paperwork requires a flight number).
What am I missing here?

Looking like Delta is the only option for flying a pet as cargo directly to the Big Island. Correct me if I am wrong.
