They have a bad spots identified and then usually on a Saturday a group shows up and hauls as much as can away. We did one down here a few months ago on red road - 6 truckloads of trash including appliances to the dump. Check it out if you use Facebook - and if you dont, you can contact Damon at damontucker.com

I thought it was Kevin Dayton who came up with the idea and pitched it to Damon and Tiffany Edwards Hunt?

Regardless, it's an excellent idea and it's great that the group is able to remove some really bulky items that have been dumped. Kudos to all involved. [Smile]

From your link:
"After thinking about the concept, I [Damon Tucker] set up the Facebook page called Opala in Paradise (Opala is the Hawaiian word for garbage)."

Specifically maybe Kevin came up with the idea, but Damon got it rolling, and he and Starsha I believe got the 1st clean-ups rolling. This was started at the time Kevin was working for the Mayor.

But thanks for the correction, KathyH. Kevin does need the kudos for the idea.

This is such great info everyone. My question is why does the State or County not have a crew picking all this crap up? Trying to control people and make them stop dumping is not gonna happen. Much of this stuff is in bags and more than likely there are addresses, personal info, etc.

Not meaning to sound like and Arlo Guthrie tune, but seems like with a little "investigation" someone could get a whopping fine and be made an example of, right?

Next mission is getting the cops to ticket those buttholes with the bright blue halogen headlights that poke your eyes out!

Have a glorious day![Big Grin]

The Opala in Paradise group has done just that. Whatever personal info they find, they do call the police and make a report. I believe they also (or Stasha was) writing to the "trash owners" to let them know OIP had picked up after them. And since the trash was "public information" - they were posting the names (only) found on envelopes etc on the FB page.

The county did have the Kulani Correction crew working the roadways for years....but the last year, we do not have that...

When we first moved here we joined in on a lava tube clean up (this was a huge cleanup - filled a full-sized Matson container in a day... most likely just a couple of households of stuff, based on the info we found!) with the Sierra club...there was a lot of personal info, including some credit cards...& enough of the waste was from the credit card holder...the community officer that was assisting us was going to see if the clean-up & fines could be charged to the card-holder....

I would definitely say that you should never litter with your IDs in the litter (and never litter at all...but I hope that most of the readers know that)....& that the HPD will try to go after large scale dumping if they can....

Sometimes when you are dealing with the lowest common denominator...they are all too obvious. Wonder if anything ever even happened as far as fines, court, etc.

I pick up other people's rubbish once a week from the end of Beach Road through the Shipman property. I am approved by the Shipman corp. guys to do this pick up and haul out. It is amazing what I get every week. Many locals still set up entire fish camps with large tarps and yet leave their rubbish. I cart out whatever I can lift and fit in my old pick up. sometimes I bring back some muscle and heave-ho to get rid of dishwashers and refridges.

I'm assuming you don't drive in because there are boulders there at the end of Beach Road that block the road. Are you hand hauling stuff out or driving in?

I've done trail maintenance on that path in the past and haven't been out there in three years.

I know of people getting fines after their trash was found by the side of the highway - fallen off the truck that collects trash bags in HPP.
