But thanks for the correction, KathyH. Kevin does need the kudos for the idea.

It wasn't meant as a correction. I did not know the full scoop, which is why I asked a question. [?]

I knew that Tiffany Edwards Hunt had some involvement as well, and was curious how it evolved, but all I really found by searching was Damon's blog post that I linked and a BIC post where she promoted the new effort.

I do think that if Kevin had the idea of making a place to report opala, that he deserves credit for that. Without the idea there is nothing to get rolling. [Smile]

Carrie, love the Arlo references! [Big Grin] What we need here are some virtual 8X10 glossy photos with circles and arrows explaining the situation!

I stand corrected. Just re-read dwedeking's post about the local woman tossing the bottles AT the trashcan--thought she was placing them BY the trashcan.

Really? Which parks can you drink alcoholic beverages at? Thought that it was a state regulation whereby it is illegal to drink in public.

There are regular pickers at several of the beach parks we go to. I'm sure that some of the recyclables get away from them as they cannot be there to collect 24/7.

There are many non-enforced regulations at parks, esp. at the beach parks, most all do carry a fine if they were enforced. ETA: Alcoholic beverages are not banned at all parks, and not even at all beach parks....just got an email on this...

Leaving litter because "some one else will pick it up" may have merit, but ONL if you know that some one else will pick it up. In the example above, Tossing water bottles from your car AT a trash can at a beach park (near enough to the parking to toss the water bottles) sounds more like littering than thoughtful placing of recyclables, and should not be encouraged.

PS. Of the tons of recyclables that I have helped remove from the beaches here (16 cleanups & counting!), I am sure most everyone that dumped the bottles & cans had some reason.... but the end result was an insult to our oceans.... I would love to see far fewer reasons to leave trash that can easily end up in the ocean....

BTW: most of the recyclables that are removed in cleanups cannot be recycled...after just a few weeks, they are too fouled to be accepted, even in the bins...so we have folks that sort through the debris hauled up by divers, and most all of that is just trash!!!

The worst offenders are the locals fishing on the cliffs. I always see bottles, fishing line, bait containers, cigarette butts, etc...etc... really an eye sore for anyone wanting to enjoy the ocean. It would be nice if we could take pictures of the people doing these acts to get them a ticket.

I also think fishing line should be taxed 5-10 time the cost so that people don't just leave it everywhere, and can pay for beach clean up's. Kinda like a bottle return. If you pickup all your broken line and bring it back you can get some of your money back.

Just a few thoughts of my own. Has anyone ever reported a car dumping out the window? If you call up the police and give them a description of the car, plate # and person driving... Will anything come of it? Is it even worth the effort?

It really irks me to pick up after others, but... I will pickup trash at the beach. Makes me a feel a little better at least.

As far as ID-ing the trash "owner": What if you hired someone to haul off your trash and the hauler illegally dumped it? Would the "owner" have to prove they had someone cart off their trash?

In the coastal cleanups I have run, cigarette butts are the #1 item (as it is worldwide) BUT most of the county & state cleanups here have cans/bottles & caps as the next highest count (bottles are #2 on the east side cleanups 7 years running)

My point? IF the bottle returns were working, I would not expect the number of bottles we recover....most of the weight is made up of recyclable, HI5 bottles....so I am not sure a tax on fish line would be any better....

What do I think needs to be done? attitude shift....& it CAN be done here...when I first was involved here, there were few 'smart' phones, few here texted on their phones & most used a clock or a watch to tell time & a camera to take a picture....we need that type of paradigm shift to change the way all of us treat the garbage & waste & litter issues... (oh & we never had a cell phone in the eastside cleanups until 3 years ago... now we have them in our counts routinely...just one or two ... but still at each cleanup...)

The only reason I mention fishing line is because turtles, whales, dolphins, monk seals, etc...etc... get caught in it and die... anything to reduce that unnecessary death would be helpful.

I think posted signs of the no litter was a change... Subliminal and small but change never the less.

If the trash hauler was a legitimate trash guy, they typically give you a receipt of some sort.

If you hired your neighbor's teenager, wouldn't you want to know that the $$'s you gave them to take your trash to the dump was wasted, and instead of doing what you asked and paid for, they went two streets up and dumped it illegally?
