40 minutes to go 8 miles

Did anyone get stuck in the traffic about 10;am between Keaau and Hilo
It was bumper to bumper, stop and go. I thought it was an accident, but no the county had reduced two lanes to one in order to scrap mud off the shoulder. It did not appear that they needed to close one lane, and it was rediculous to do such work at that time of day. I missed a doctor's appointment.

Did not get stuck but had a nice, long, conversation with a friend who was.

Donno if this was suggested already here ... Why not simply use cones and have 3/1 lanes inbound in AM and 3/1 lanes outbound in PM ? Oh and don't do roadwork during these times : )

There are strict federal OSHA rules governing lane closures that road crews have to follow based on posted speed of the road, the faster the road the more lanes they have to close. The rules were put into place because of how many flaggers and road workers were being plowed down by careless motorists who were in a hurry and didn't want to respect that 1/2 lane closure, and that was before cell phones.

I just wish there was better communication in advance on these jobs. My husband used to work in roads and I am willing to plan for a delay so some other husband gets home alive, I just want that warning so I can plan for the delay.

I understand that there are strict rules to follow and they are there for good reason. What I don't understand are some of the decisions made here by whoever determines what roadwork needs to be done and when.

A few months ago I was stuck on H-130 on a weekday at 9am because of work being carried out on the side of H-11. I assumed there had been an accident because there was nothing on any of the local radio stations and no advance warning. I turned around and went back home and told everyone at work I'd be at home for a while. That highway work could have been done at night or at least in the late afternoon on the less-busy Keaau to Hilo lanes. It would have cost a little extra in overtime but it likely lost many thousands to companies in Hilo, Keaau etc that couldn't get their workers to where they should be. That's just one example of the many times I've come across delays on H-11 that really haven't been thought-through properly.

Just to add to my rant - I'm sick and tired of coming across signs on H-11 that say the left or right lane is closed ahead. It's almost invariably the case that those signs are wrong and utterly misleading and there is no lane closure. Those of us who like to drive safely and considerately will move to the lane that's not supposed to be closed only to find no closure for miles ahead and that traffic has been slowed because people are driving responsibly. Given the poor driving standards here it's really frustrating to see signs like this that actually penalize good driving, slow down traffic in general and actually increase the risk of an accident because drivers are being asked to make lane changes for no good reason.

Oh boy, sometimes I wish I was in charge!

That is a State Highway, not a County Highway.
So, it was the State Department of Transportation.

It was a test to see what the reaction would be !!!

Do you realize what the traffic is going to be like when construction starts ?

Traffic has seriously increased since the Keeau bypass and the last widening took place.

The alternate route should be the first priority !!

If Highway 130 is the first priority, those of you who commute will go through a 10 year heck !!

Glad I am retired and I like to shop in Pahoa !!
