I've noticed that Walmart stocks low chill apple, plum and peach trees - which are supposed to grow and produce fruit in our area.
Researching just a bit, there was an online article about a resident in Keahou who had managed to grow peaches in impressive numbers.
Friends in lower HPP had some low chill blueberries going - but the rain caused rot problems.
While I love living here, I miss my midwestern rearing which included the enjoyment of freshly harvested peaches, plums, apples, cherries and almonds.
Anyone try low chill?
Any success???
Thanks in advance,

I've seen producing apple trees in the middle of Leilani at about 700' and just the other day saw a peach tree with both fruit and flowers at the top of Blacksands at about 900'. Don't know if they would grow at low elevation.

I have also read that stripping the leaves off the branches in the "dormant" season, will improve chances of fruit. I have not yet planted a low chill tree here at 1800 ft, but it is on my list for things to do when I have the funds.
SO, where else do people buy low chill fruit trees, and how have they done for you?

I noticed quite a few at Paradise Plants when I was there a few days ago. I did not check which varieties they were. I would trust Leslie more than WalMart.

We have a peach we got a couple of years ago at the Puna Hongwanji sale... the lady had fruit from the source tree at the sale & we bought & brought it home.
Right now it has 3 fruit set & 2 more blossoms...the first year to bloom... so too early to give any more info... this is in 'downtown' Keaau around 350' elevation (as were the parent source trees)
