We are here!

'feel the same way about the mainland - fun to visit - no place to hang my hat without feeling "managed" or controlled by peer pressure....

I still keep a vacation property, not worth selling in the imploded market - taxes sky high as well

each his own, that is what makes a horse race - best regards

Bullwinkle, I don't know how you did it - in reverse, but you nailed it perfectly. "Managed, controlled by peer pressure", is what Hawaii was to me. Here I take a deep breath and really feel it, and neighbors don't judge based on my color alone.

each his own, horse racing is animal abuse - best regards.

For 40 years I felt like I was swimming against the stream. My 2 years here it's felt like I could just ride the current down river and wind up further towards my goals with half the work. I was visiting with family couple months ago and my sister in law said she'd feel at peace here (inside I was shaking my head as it's just not in her personality). Secret is to find that place that allows you to just ride the current.

"Secret is to find that place that allows you to just ride the current. "

However, once you find that place (inside yourself), you can live anywhere.

Pretty words, but some places just suck - it's that simple.

It's about your neighborhood. Doesn't matter what you like, or want, or aspire to, or have dreamed about; if you live in the neighborhood from hell, you will not be happy.

If you have stereo man for a neighbor who blasts it so high it rattles your windows all day and all night, you are screwed. If you have a meth factory and brothel accross the street and they sell 24/7, you are screwed. If another neighbor is an abuser and knocks his significant other's teeth out on a regular basis, you are screwed. Calling the local police is such a joke it's painfull.

HB sucks, I've never been happier to get out of anywhere. Please folks, if you are considering the move, DO NOT move to lower Puna.

So Brad have you found the place that suits you??? Bet that is hard to do seeing that crime is on the rise just about everywhere. Now if you find a place in the middle of now where you might have a chance, then you would have to worry about the critters.

I have mc, thank you. Six and a quarter acres up on a hill from the valley floor on a sagebrush step. My view is of the Owyhee Mountains - snow up there today. New 3000 sf stucco and cottage lath home, four bedrooms, three baths, greatroom, two fireplaces, huge walk-in tile shower, monster soaker tub. It has a 2400 sf two story steel framed and steel skinned shop with twelve foot tall doors. Paid almost to the penny what we sold the Hawaiian Beaches home for. Neighbors here are amazing - mostly horse folks who are quiet and mind their own business, and are as respectfull of our rights and privacy as we are of theirs. We all get together for beers every couple of weeks. Critters are hawks and eagles, partridge, pheasants and quail. Could not be happier. How's it goin' with you?

Ah, the great state of Oregon. All the problems and strife Brad W mentions about here are multiplied there. I was born there, spent 40 years there, wouldn't have it as a gift.

Widen out your mind lguy, the Owyhees can be seen from several states. And maybe the question should be, would Oregon have you as a gift? Likely not.

Isn't it nice that there is someplace for everyone? Brad has found his place, Lguy his, and for now this is the place for us. No one can perdict the future. Our needs and wishes might change someday. That's ok, it's been a grand adventure so far. Had we not made our move to Hawaii Island almost two years ago I would have always wondered if it was something we should have done. Yes, the move is expensive. Yes living here is not like living on the mainland. Yes crime exists here, but doesn't it everywhere? We have found wonderful people here, had many good experiences and very few bad. Do your research, prepare as much as you can. Have faith in your judgement and then do what seems right for you.
