I respectfully disagree on Ruth at Akonapet. She is useless. And rude. Don't call her. I did better the moment I cut the tie with her and did my own research and thinking.
My girl came cargo on Delta direct from LAX to KOA. They did a perfect job. She was in a 700 carrier, although she is only 50 lbs. She avoided the interisland problem. Interisland they take only a certain size carrier. In addition it adds hours to the travel time. Find a direct flight to KOA if you can.

When we arrived in Oahu on Hawaiian Air, with our 97lb. German Shepard they told us one hour before our transfer flight that our kennel was too large.
Although they had the exact measurements before hand as required.
Aloha shipped our dog to Hilo with no problem.
Hawaiian never reimbursed us the ticket we had prepaid for the original flight.
Aloha Cargo was very cooperative.

For the future you might consider getting Bear a service dog designation. Since Bear has flown so often and it is now becoming harder to do, a service dog can fly in the cabin.
In search function on punaweb you will find threads on hotels with dogs and service dog requirements discussed.
Having a dog become a service animal will take a lot of research to do. I looked into it for my older dog so I could bring her to Hawaii hotels. Very hard to find a hotel on Kona side to take a dog.
With the service dog designation you have to have a disability that the dog helps with.
There are also emotional support dogs which are different than service dogs. Emotional support dogs need a doctor letter stating that the dog helps you in some emotional psychological way. The internet has doctors who will write this letter.
I did the research and decided not to get either service dog or emotional support dog designation. Now I leave the older dog and my big puppy at Hilo Kennels and they are so happy there.
Just thought I would mention the option of service designation dog because it seems Bear flies often. Worth looking into if it would fit for you or someone in your family so Bear could bypass cargo and fly in cabin.

Nope, not saying he should lie. Just trying to help.
I suggested he look into this if the requirements would fit his situation or situation of someone in his family
Read my last sentence in the post you are saying I told him to lie:

I am not sure that would work out. Bear is often very vocal, sometimes uncontrolably in unfamiliar situations. His bark might blow out the windows in the cabin.
I talked with the vet in Kona. Seems like the only option that I have is to go with cargo. $4/lb! Radical diet?

Yes Daniel...GSD's are usually not shy about expressing their opinions...my beautiful dogs father named Bear is a Schutzhund champion from Oahu,, she is a great dog , but only minor fault tooo vocal, and to me mostly , not as much to my wife, who is #2 in command

The ADA opened the door that disability is defined only by the person who is claiming it. Probably 1/2 the "service dogs" in my community are owned by people abusing the system because they enjoy taking their pets into the stores and restaurants. If somebody was so stressed out by the fact that their animal was going into cargo that it caused any sort of claimed disability, it would be allowed in the cabin because the passenger didn't invent the rules, they are just playing by the rules.

Just FYI those people that say you can just make your dog a service dog & fly it in cabin have no idea what they are talking about. . It's not going to happen. Pony up the cash find the best airline and fly your dog under the plane. From SFO in fall when it's not so hot. I love my Doberman but they say the only way he is flying in cabin is if we fly private. Anyone going our way I'll by the gas.
