After my last post I'm almost afraid to start another thread.
But, here goes anyway.
I have grown orchids in my home for many years.
If I'm honest, I would admit to being a "species snob".
I have little interest in hybrids.
I have specialized in "cool dry rest" Dendrobium species with a strong fondness for the large pendant growing types such as:
D. anosmum, aphyllum, devonianum, gratiosissimum, findlayanum, crystallinum, parishii, pendulum, loddigessii, nobile, falconeri, primulinum, transparens, chrysanthum and the list goes on from there.
I am very enthused with the idea of being able to grow these types of orchids in my yard for a change!
1.
Anyone having success with any of these or similar species in the Puna area?
2.
Are there any suppliers in Hawaii that carry species orchids, specifically Dendrobiums?
3.
What are the problems involved with ordering them from mainland suppliers?
I will undoubtedly have more culture questions if I can find some knowledgeable people.

I'm not sure if this is what you are looking for, but this place is a beautiful place to visit with many orchid types.

The Hilo Orchid Society website, you should be able to find the information you are looking for.
Hilo Library also has wonderful selection of books on orchids in Hawaii.

I am not anywhere near knowledgeable, but do know quite a few dendrobium growers (Check out Hawaii Orchid Growers link for dendrobium species:
http://www.ogoh.org ), including some commercial growers that post here on occasion. Most that I know of utilize shade cloth or greenhouse coverings.
I am a buy a mislabeled plant at clearance, stick it in a tree & see if it lives type grower, & have quite a few happy orchids, including some nice pendulum dendrobiums.
The eastside of Hawaii Island is a 'hot spot' for orchid development & tissue culturing, and the orchid society is very active, not just with information, but has a nice orchid show every August at the stadium with beautiful displays and a lot of informational talks, including many from some of the tissue researchers here & also does provide community service with things like the supply & maintenance of the orchids at the Pana`ewa Rainforest Zoo & Gardens (

@SandyS
We had stopped by their place when we were on BI a couple of years ago. they had a lot of very fine orchids, but nothing that filled the bill for my addiction. As I remember, everything they had available were hybrids.
@taropatch & hikatz
Once I'm located there, I will be in contact with the local orchid society.
@Carey
In searching this site, I found some older post about the August orchid show. I will definitely attend looking for as much info as I can glean. I have seen the orchid growers website but did not come away with a feeling that anyone on the list would fill my needs. Although, visiting them may prove otherwise.
What I need to do is get a hold of a local acquaintance here in AK. She used to make yearly trips to somewhere in HI. She would bring back many new orchids stuffed into her luggage. I believe she was going to one of the other islands. I remember looking at the website of the grower she was going to and noting that they did grow a lot of species orchids. Although as I remember, they specialized in things like Bulbophyllums and similar, which are of little interest to me.
EDIT:
I did some searching last night and found the grower:
Tropical Orchid Farm on Maui.
It is beginning to seem that, while I may find a few that I will be looking for available in HI, I'll probably need to purchase most of the types I am interested in from the mainland. That looks as if it will be a bit more complicated requiring import permits, plant quarantines, certificates of origin, etc.
Thanks for your input.

1voyarer1,
Contact me via email privately. I know a young man locally who is growing many, many species orchids and may help you find what you want.

Perhaps your next topic will be "Bringing Orchids When Moving to B.I."
Assume the best and ask questions.

I was hoping to quietly walk away from that one without anyone noticing.
