Growing Fruit Trees in HPP
#1
Aloha,
I just got a lot in HPP and now I have very little money to work with. It is my dream to become self sufficient, and growing my own food is going to be one of the main things I get started with.
So, I'm looking for the cheapest way to get started growing fruit trees, huge amounts of them(I'm a fruitarian). It is pahoehoe lava and there is no soil, so will I NEED to have holes dug or can I just bring in lots of soil and mulch and plant on top of the lava? How expensive would it be to have someone dig out about 50 holes for fruit trees? I have a flat lot with little vegetation on it(it's on 1st avenue).

Thanks so much for any advice about growing fruit on pahoehoe![Smile]

Ripping is realy expensive these days. I suggest trucking in cinder soil (a 50/50 mix from Bryson Cinders). It's about $500.00 a truckload.... but it works! Fruit trees love it. I'm on 5th in HPP and had 2 truckloads brought in and dumped on top of unripped lava and they did great (limes, lemons, grapefruit, oranges, mandarins..etc) Try to find a low spot to dump the dirt. The deeper...the better.

Ask for black cinder soil, because they will deliver red cinder soil if you do not specify and it packs down fast and is not nearly as desirable.
