Greetings from a potential resident.

John Dirgo did right by us and has the patience of a saint. He has helped many Punawebbers over the years. I certainly will use him again if I ever buy another house, although the thought of going through house hunting again with my husband is daunting!

Karen Schneider of Prudential is good, too. You would be wise to rent for awhile so you know the area before you buy, and talk to people who live in the neighborhood. Puna is not right for everyone, though we think we have found Paradise!
Good luck, and welcome!

Lots of good restaurants in Pahoa. Can't believe how many restaurants there are for such a small town! The Makuu farmer's market has a lot of good food vendors. I think a lot of locally owned restaurants use local fresh foods. The Hilo Bay Cafe in Hilo is really good. They use a lot of locally grown foods. I like to go there just to get their coconut-limeade. It's amazing.

We have three of the best farmers markets, possibly, in the entire state. Sunday's Makuu Market, Pahoa Market and the markets at Uncle Roberts.

Take your time and get to know the area. There's all kinds of micro-climates. Punawebbers feedback is an invaluable resource.

Sundays Ecstatic Dance event at Kalani Oceanside Retreat is really wonderful and maybe, unique in the state.

Welcome to Puna!

What's up tigerlily? (Sorry, been waiting my whole life for the chance to say that. Smile

Some folks think Puna is the best place in the world. And some don't. It's personal preference/lifestyle, so due diligence is essential to making the right decision. That means living here for a while to get the lay of the land.

Which brings me to my next point: I think many folks who live here will agree (well, maybe not the realtors) that it's a good idea to rent before buying so you can get a feel for the area, figure out where you fit best, etc. Standing in your shoes in the current situation, it's exactly what I would do. My humble two cents.

Best of luck in your move!

It's a who new world! I've been here for 6 days and I'm happy have family to stay with because it's very rural in some places and it can be lonely and a lil hard to make friends. Rent before you buy and make sure your phone work and you live close to something or you might get cabin fever. Just saying! Aloha!

As others have said, rent before you buy is a very good idea. Also, when buying in Puna make sure you spend time in the neighborhood you are thinking about buying in. That means more than visiting and looking at houses with an agent. Spend a good part of a night there, see what the situation is regarding barking dogs or other noises, see if there are any unusual happenings. Realistically, you'd want to spend a couple of weeks at least to really get a feel for things. You probably don't want to find out your neighbors have screaming fights every second or third night AFTER you've purchased a house. As to agents, Jerry Bragdon of Worldwide Realty is a really great guy and a knowledgeable agent. Also, John Rabi is a class act (who also posts on this forum) but he doesn't yet have an office Puna side, although I hear that's in the works.
Me ka ha`aha`a,
Mike
