Last week our old motorcycle was involved in an accident that was from a driver distracted by the sign waving along 11 - someone was on the side of the road talking to a sign waver, then just pulled out right in front of the motorcycle.... hit the motorcycle, that took the driver for very painful & skin shredding slide on the highway.... PLEASE BE ALERT & ATTENTIVE IN THESE AREAS!!!
Rob - per your construction reminder, perhaps there should be all of the construction warning signs, speed limits & policing for the sign waving, as people are being distracted from their driving (esp those pulling out after talking to a waver...)

I always thought the same thing about the hazards of these fools waving signs. I think maybe in addition to slowing down but also to throw on your hazard signal might not be a bad idea as well.

I know of of two incumbant candidates who announced they would not sign wave as a matter of principle.
They both lost!
Does anyone remember who they were?

Sign waving on 130 is dangerous and stupid. I have participated in various campaigns over the last 25 years and never heard of a campaign that had paid sign waivers. They are volunteers.

Monday, Wendell Ka'ehu'ae'a 's people were waving at the end of the bottleneck, along with a couple of Tulsi Gabbard's people. That's the worst spot, as that's where drivers need to be watching the road, and that is where traffic should start speeding up, not slowing down. Greggor Ilagan was waving at KHS. Better spot, still not great. The bottleneck was much worse than usual that day when I went through at 6:00 PM.

I don't know if any of the candidates (other than James Weatherford) read these forums, but if you do, please reconsider this custom. It may have been harmless back when it started when there was little traffic. At least, stay away from high-risk intersections such as Keaau and the Pahoa turnoff. Mahalo

We made a conscious decision to not go to the bottleneck, and have stayed off hwy 130 except for last Friday afternoon mauka of Shower Dr. The rest of the time we have been at the approach to exits from subdivisions -- Paradise Dr., Shower Dr., Leilani Ave., Nanawale Blvd., Kahakai Ave -- early every weekday morning.
For my side of the wave, it is safer and saner for everyone concerned.

Rick - I assume you will be interested to know that Dolan and his sign wavers have been at the Keaau bottleneck - just this evening in fact. Sign waving on 130 is definitely dangerous but have noticed sudden and unusual slowdowns on 11 the last two evenings as well where the wavers are, and that is not safe either. And I don't know which idiot it was dancing around in the shoulder of 11 the other day giving us all the thumbs up. It was just downright dangerous and highly distracting. It was right were the motorbike accident happened last week as well.
P.S. Carey - I wonder if the motorbike incident you refer to was the one I saw the tail end of last week - see my post near the start of this thread.

Tom, our old motorcycle went down on the southbound lanes, just past the Panaewa Zoo sign...new owner tried to avoid the car pulling out, but was hit & put the bike down in a skid - driver has lots of road rash, messed up shoulder, cracked ribs, & ripped up foot....bike is again not too bad, considering the damage to the driver.... The guys are thinking the bike should be named "Christine".... I'm thinking "endtable"...

Carey - good to know the rider is still with us. All of us in the jam pulled over when we heard the sirens only realising a minute or two later that the ambulance was driving the other way (toward Hilo - probably with the bike rider in it). When I passed the accident site the police had put the bike back upright and it didn't look too bad but didn't get a close look - a mirror or two seemed to be missing but at least it wasn't in several small pieces.
From what you're saying I think this was the same incident. The sign wavers were all leaving in what I can only called a shocked state - one or two hugging each other and not looking very happy.
