We've been trying to get DSL for our cottage in Orchidland (on 37th) for 3 years now...no available ports. It's gotten to the point that when I call Hawaiian Tel they say "How can we help you Rich, but before you ask, there are no DSL ports available..." We use a MiFi card from Verizon Wireless, which works well, but is expensive...

What about cable internet? The cottage we're staying in at Hawaiian Acres has a bundle package of internet/phone/cable. The internet sucks half the time but at least it's better than dial up!

Hello,

As there is no DSL available in Orchidland, and no cable, we have been using Verizon 4G but beyond being expensive, it doesn't work well most of the time. So we are forced to look at satellite options. Does anybody have recent experience with satellite internet in Puna? We called Exede as they advertise 12/3 but they unfortunately do not provide service in this area. I believe that leaves only Hughes which I know from references in Alaska has a lot to be desired. Any helpful feedback/opinions appreciated.

Regarding DSL, I've called them a few times and they told me they now get 10-20 calls PER DAY from Orchidland residents looking for DSL. Should somebody die or cancel their account, the first person to call that next day is the lucky winner of a DSL line. They also said that they don't really have any plans at this time to increase capacity in the area. In other words, "good luck".

Been there done that. I could actually hear them laughing at me on the phone.

where in orchidland? my friend use to have them don't know if he still uses them or not. He setup a access point at his house. I was gonna join because I got the same song and dance from helco. Sadly, there aren't very many options for orchidland. Sat and Cell are your best bet with cell being probably your best option even if you have to set up your own cell amplifier.

It appears that orchidland really is the red headed stepchild of the internet. At least up on 40th it does not qualify for the new Verizon "Home Fusion" service because in their words, "the coverage map is probably wrong".
