The only way to find out is to go. The market starts at five

Five to Nine PM. Lots of food, crafts, produce, baked goods and great live entertainment. Attendance grows every week, so arrive early if you want to park in the same zip code as the market.

It's pretty fun. If Ikaika Marzo and Uncle Glen are playing, the music is guaranteed to be good......not your typical Farmer's Market music. These guys are really, really good (and I thought they were very nice, too). Ikaika is an underrated slack key guitarist. He is simply superlative. It just pours out of him. He's the real deal and very close to the source.

Although there is some produce, it isn't so much a Farmer's Market, but more like a little Lower Puna fair with lots of food, some unusual plants, good ice cream. You can see it all in about 5 minutes. For me, the music and maybe some of the plants would be the draw.

If you have a passport, take it and they will stamp it "Hawaiian Kingdom" (thus possibly defacing your passport in some way prohibited by Federal regulation, but you only live once and I think enforcement is lax).

The road is narrow and leaving is sometimes a little messy, but it's not like exiting the Hollywood Bowl or anything. You just have to walk carefully to your car so you don't get run over, and then drive carefully until you no longer hear the menehune murmuring and you begin the road up and back to civilization. If you see the torches of the night marchers, just keep driving and do not answer them if they ask "Who goes there". If the words "Hawaiian Kingdom" suddenly disappear from your passport in a puff of smoke, pay it no mind. You will once again be in compliance with Federal regulation.

The absolute best thing is seeing Kalapana coming back after so many years. Awesome, awesome, awesome. If you remember Kalapana, you remember the strong spirit there. This reminds me of that spirit and I'm grateful to have see this happening.

True, Jackson & Kalena. It's awesome, the spirit and the music. It's just that... it's gotten so BIG and, dare I say it, commercial. I miss the old Wed night potlucks, Uncle Robert tooling around, the Hawaiian Kingdom outdoor museum, the awa bar... I'm nostalgic for the way it was.

Ha Ha Maude Gone. Commercial? Maybe compared to four years ago, but to me it still feels "home made" and very Big Island. It kind of makes me want to rebuild in Kalapana (cheaply). I would get a little worried if the tour busses started showing up like the old days Smile
