Accident at Hirano's
#1
Anyone know what is happening/happened at Hirano's? HWY 11 is backed up on both sides, no cars are moving. Must have been a terrible car accident. God bless and drive safe.

I am curious. Since I have only lived on the BI for 10 months, I wouldn't have any idea how to "divert" from that location. Surely there are roads that can bi-pass the road closure. Especially when a fatality is involved. The police have to re-create the accident and it can take hours before traffic can flow again.
Anyone know of other roads?

There is no way to divert from the highway once you pass Peck Rd. One could always turn around and drive around the island.

Map shows two roads between Eden Roc and Fern Forest; unfortunately, both are blocked.

"A 33-year old woman from Glenwood was following from behind in a 2005 Dodge van when she crossed the centerline to avoid a collision but struck the Ford station wagon.

Police are investigating whether the driver of the Ford station wagon made an abrupt turn into Hirano Store." - thanks Damon

I'm confused........... I was sure it was going to be a case of following to closely (a bad big island driving convention) Ive owned vans, best thing about them is one is high enough to see over the vehicle in front of the van.....

The article seems not to fault the van...........

There is a road between Fern Forest and Eden Roc, and you can get through, I've done it when another accident at the same spot did the same thing. You have to have a high and narrow 4wd though. People have made the road a dumping site for junked cars, appliances, etc.

That intersection has been the scene of dozens of accidents just in recent years and several deaths Sad Just a few months ago a baby was involved that flew out of the vehicle and miraculously survived. The roads are quite hidden from view as you're coming down the highway at 60mph. and people coming from the roads do not have an adequate line of sight unless they nose out into the highway. Add to that the dingbat drivers who think it's perfectly fine to pass on the right curb when someone is turning left and you have a recipe for disaster. Not to mention the drunks that hang out at the park and pull onto the highway right there.

I heard through the community that it was especially gruesome this round. This needs to be addressed, and soon. My heart goes out to those affected, hugging my family tight...
