Accident at Hirano's
#11
It's too bad we, in Eden Roc, had to block that road. It should be open for emergency access; such as when there's a fire or Fern Forest's roads are flooded.

We had to block it because Fern Forest thieves, druggies and racers use Eden Roc as their personal playground. And the ones who use it to get to work quicker or avoid highway disasters haul a** and don't pay road fees and put our children and walkers/joggers/bike riders/ animals in grave danger.[Sad!]

I see terrible driving behavior on my way home every day; no turn signal, 1 side brake light out, or none at all, no SEAT BELT, a bunch of left turns on the way and drivers driving on the shoulder at 45 mph to go around. Sad, the whole thing.

Whoa, Mailes... that's a pretty heavy finger you're pointing all in one direction. Why would you assume that all the thieves, druggies and racers are Fern Forest origin? Seems like Eden Roc has plenty of its own in all of those categories. FF wasn't just in the news for multiple arsons and a murder, that was Eden Roc. There are plenty of punks that use the roads that live in neither place. Ease up on the stereotyping of all the ills coming from this side of the jungle... Good neighbors is where it's at. Instead of separating and pointing fingers, the good people of both communities should be working to come together and keep the access points open for the good of both subdivisions.

it may be also possible to connect north glenwood to lehuanani. i'd also like to see an alternate route from volcano to pahoa along the south edge of the subdivisions / north edge of the forest reserve.

A great idea is to park your vehicle, on any given day, just past road 17. Then you'll know and you'll apologize.

Also, giving people advice to drive through Fern Forest to get to Eden Roc to get to Highway 11 past a road closure is ill-advised without mentioned to them that they cannot use what is actually a road; that they must in fact drive on the adjoining Private Property because the road is blocked and inaccessible. What of the person who owns that property?

Also, all of the appliances, tires, loads of bags of garbage that's strewn around those by-pass roads all came from Fern Forest inhabitants.

Those are the reasons that, despite our desire to leave the road open as an emergency access road, the road has been blocked since the 1960's.

nana valley stated:

Why "surely" must their be a road to divert to just because there is a fatality? Have you not yet figured out that you live on an island and a rural one at that? Usually there IS only one way to/from a place.

A lo of people that sat in that traffic did not have to. The police dept. has a notification system called Nixle that sends out messages to people's cell phones and email to let them know of accidents and road closures. Civil Defense has a similar program called Citywatch that sends out alerts in the event of natural disasters. Both programs are free, both have been around for years, and both take about 15 seconds to sign up on the dept.'s respective web sites. So unless you were caught in the immediate aftermath there was no need to sit in traffic.

The issue of unsafe drivers is a bigger and much tougher one to tackle. That stretch of road is bad. Short of the state doing something (which I don't see happening any time soon) it falls to each of us to be more careful, which is much harder to do than bitching about other people.

They are putting in a traffic light to the entrance road that goes to Hawaiian acres/fern acres. There should be turning lanes on the highway, at least, to any road that leads to a subdivision. After I pass mile marker 15, if there's a car behind me, I pull over to let them pass instead of chancing that they'll pay attention to my signal/brakes. 7-11 got a traffic light, Hirono store should get a traffic light.

OK, I'll bite... What will a person see exactly if they park their car just past road 17 and what would I be apologizing for after seeing it?

I mean, if the road is blocked and yet you're complaining of awful and aggressive drivers in the subdivision, and yet claiming they're from FF, then how are they getting there? And how are you identifying that the people you're upset with are from Fern Forest specifically? Lastly, how are you identifying that all the items dumped between the two subdivisions are from Fern Forest? These all seem like huge assumptions and sweeping stereotypes. The Fern Forest of the 60's is most definitely not the Fern Forest of today. I get a little fired up when our entire subdivision is classed as lowlife scum.

I'm not giving people advice to drive through there, I simply said that a person CAN get through there if absolutely necessary, though it's not easy. I don't see that it's private property on the subdivision maps for the route that is closest to the highway. If the road is blocked now, then it has changed since the several months ago when I last used it. There are two potential connecting points. One toward the front and one toward the back/middle. The middle one is closed with a bar. The top was not closed with anything last time I was there. But lots of twisted metal and glass is present. If there is private property, then that person would need to post it and do their part to secure their property if they don't want it used.

"Also, all of the appliances, tires, loads of bags of garbage that's strewn around those by-pass roads all came from Fern Forest inhabitants." Will you please provide some evidence here? Both communities should work together to clean the crap up, because BOTH communities are responsible. Then both could work together to keep it clean, set some good boundaries and presence there and keep the access open.

Sounds like Hatfields and McCoys or something...

Turning lanes would solve A LOT. Seems more imperative there even than at Kulani, because at least people were already slowed down at Kulani because of the school zone... But I know there were a lot of accidents going on there as well, so it's good they're working on that. It's all improvement... I'm just hoping Glenwood intersection is next. We've almost been clipped there numerous times. There isn't sufficient signage noting that there is a four way intersection there. And the high corners on all four sides should be leveled off for adequate sighting, both for people coming onto the highway and people coming off. I wouldn't be able to get away with putting in a commercial driveway to those standards, not sure how a major intersection with major incidents has slipped through the cracks for so long...

I think we actually need three new traffic lights: upper Mountain View, Glenwood, Volcano.

Also there should be nothing with a driveway directly onto the highway. Close 'em down, it's too unsafe.
