Accident at Hirano's
#21
Right, DanielP? Kalakoa, good observation on the need for three lights. We can't close down all driveways onto the highways unless we make another highway, leaving the existing one as a side road for all the existing houses/properties on the highway. They have to have access, can't legally landlock them at this point. But the way the highway divisions work, it's no small miracle to get any of the paperwork through anyway. Guess that's their way or regulation.

Driveways touching the State Road must meet State DOT requirements, and wouldn't you know, those vary depending which DOT office you call...

I'm sure DOT has a plan for more traffic signals, the questions is what their timeline says and/or how they decide when to install. The existing development density is already unsafe for the amount of traffic, so it's just a matter of time until the next accident.

I have always felt that the existing Hwy11 should become a secondary street with a new highway built a few hundred feet mauka, with commercial clusters spaced between. But the cost is probably not doable.

I ride my Motorcycle everyday to work, coming out of the forest. So far so good.

Ok...lots of questions.

What you would see are all the people trying to use (using) road 17 (Punahele) coming from Fern Forest. The reason I say coming from Fern Forest is because that's what's on the other side of the yellow brick road (as we so lovingly call it). I don't know if people are specifically driving an extra 15 minutes to go through Fern Forest to get to Eden Roc from the highway, but it's possible.

Road 17 is the middle road; the one with the welded gate on it and Huge Rocks and Tons of hunks of Concrete Dams.

The lower road is even worse because people wouldn't want to hang out in, or even drive through, lower Ohia!

The upper road, well that's another story. That is Road 1, Kahikopele and that is paved BY Eden Roc'ers all the way through the access road that Kopua Farms uses to get to S. Kopua road. That road does not belong to us, but we paved it but the County mows it. So, if Fern Forest'ers AND Eden Roc'ers AND Kopua Farmer's were to share the cost to maintain the road...wouldn't that be a doozy!

When I was on the board, I tried to get them to understand that allowing Fern Forest people, ambulance, fire, police and peeps stuck on the highway would be in the best interest of everyone Via Kahikopele. And, that it may prevent a lawsuit in the future if something happens to a Fern Forest'er. That's the road where peeps who are moving or whatever that live in Eden Roc generally dump their crap along with dumping on the old Queen's Path (which is far more shameful than what's happening on 17.

We went through the trash (inadvertantly) because we had to pick it up and dump it anyway. People throw their bills in the same trash they throw in the forest. Both boards have a billing list that anyone has access to. And as far as the appliances, with every new one that shows up, you can see the obvious tire marks.

I tried many times, and I'm not the only one, to get Fern Forest to participate but the sentiment was that they can barely keep up with maintaining their own roads. It costs alot to pave Kahikopele and Ohia from road 17.

Fern Forest has Mandatory road fees, Eden Roc's are all voluntary and we collect more road fees; i'm just saying...hatfield.

It's all been discussed, agreements tried to be made, solutions hashed out; that's what I got from prior board members in Eden Roc and Fern Forest and believe me, I tried to call them all. 50 years later...same situation.

I don't think that people who dump their garbage like it's Forest Food, drive through other people's property, are druggies, thieves, wreckless drivers are "low life scum". I think that they have problems and they think that those are their solutions. I know I took my couch and a few other small bags to the dump and they charged me almost $50. That is the problem.

Lelia road, where that flatbed was taken, that intersects with Ahi in Eden Roc. Road 8, where the volunteer fire station is.

I think that's the upper road that you're talking about that you see on the map. 8 roads, in Eden Roc, is a mile. So, they should open that road an an access road. I know the volunteer fire man would be happy about that. It would save fern foresters 15-25 minute or so drive who traverse that way.

Fern Forest has almost 50 miles of roads. Barely enough $ to keep the forest from taking them back. Leila is paved for the first 1/4 mile down from Captains and is pretty rough from there on down. Kalaponi would be the likely through road to connect to Eden Roc, but not paved. The only way a thru road gets done is if the County foots the bill. That is doubtful.
However, If I was living on Bottom Road in FF and my brother was a few hundred feet to the North in Eden Roc, I would have to drive over 10 miles to get to his driveway.

So it is. Any news on the accident?

jrw: I'm on Palainui near the bottom of the subdivision; no where near 17 and Ohia. I don't drive on Ohia at all.

If you look on the map, there's only 3 roads connecting Fern Forest and Eden Roc. Those roads were in place before I moved here...lol. I'm only looking at the possibilities; roads that are already in place, that pass through both subdivisions.

Hmmm....Daniel...no easy answer. Must be what the Czech Rep. and Slovakia feel like.

edited to add: I personally advocated for Eden Roc and Fern Forest to have the County state in writing something about road 17 the year the Highway was closed because of downed trees and people had to go to the emergency shelter.

They wouldn't put in writing anything about the road; whether it could be blocked by Eden Roc, whether it must remain accessible. The would say "these are private roads, with public access". Well, why does the subdivision by the lighthouse have a gate to lock people out of the "public access" part of their private road? and the beat goes on...

I know I can drive through Hawaiian Acres from Highway 11 and end up on 19 130, all on a County paved road. I'd imagine enough people got together and advocated for it. But I couldn't get enough people from Eden Roc, Fern Forest and surrounding areas to advocate for those "converging" roads from Fern Forest to Eden Roc AND from Eden Roc through Kopua Farms, through Fern Acres, through Hawaiian Acres, up to Ainaloa to Highway 19 130. This should be a new topic.
