Nanawale Estates area
#1
After reading the postings about the Leilani area, I realized that there was a great deal of knowledge/opinions that I could use from people on here regarding the Nanawale Estates subdivision and the area. Does anyone have any opinions about the people, the land, the commute to Hilo, etc.? [I have a lot on Lehua, so if that helps.] All info would be appreciated. Also, if you have a standard sized lot (8040 sq. ft.), how much do you think of the land could be used to grow a garden (there will of course be a home on it)? I would want avocado trees, citrus, whatever grows there. Thanks!

Aloha NanawaleJulie! We have a home(3 years) in Nanawale which we rent out and we own 2 abutting lots to our house. We like the quiet, privacy and no traffic middle to low section. Of course, with numerous vacant 'lots ', TONS OF COQUI! Clearing the lot will give you enough space for garden, trees and home, PLUS clear out the froggie's. (ya right) We plan to have raised beds and fenced in for garden once we officially move in. There is just about enough top soil for plants, but I am used to beds. New Enlander born and raised with tons of rocks in our neck of woods, so beds were easier. Yahoo! We Will be there in 25 days.....for a month! When we walk the roads and neighborhoods, everyone we met so far has been friendly and chatty, of course we are 'chatty' too! More fun that way! what is your time frame to join and build? Our's is early 2008 for permanent move. Enjoy!

Nanawale Estates used to have a really bad reputation but, fortunately, things have changed for the much better during the past 10 or so years. I used to own a lot on Crystal Circle and I was planning to build there but I decided to sell it and buy a larger lot in Leilani Estates. I am sure John Dirgo can give you more details since he lives there.

Not trying to slam any other location, but was the reputation of Nanawale on the same level as, say, Hawaiian Acres?
I'm thinking of hemp gardening, junk cars, gunfire? The Neighborhood Watch signs, CCRs that prohibit chickens (so no fighting cock farming/manure smells), and size of the lots would seem to restrict the accumulation of junk cars (60 some ft wide) and other offensive behaviors.
Please elaborate - what would a bad neighborhood reputation include?
I have heard a resident of HPP wish that they'd bought in Nanawale instead. Should have asked them why, I guess. (The CCRs also define a minimum house size, which most subs do not, I think - tell me if I'm wrong in that assumption.)

It had a reputation for a lot of theft and drug activity. It has improved a lot in recent years. My Nanawale house has several citrus trees and the adjoining vacant lot has avocados that drop into my yard (that makes them mine, right?). I've enjoyed living there. My house is in the back section where not much is built. There are coquis, but as I've said in other threads, they don't bother me.

Hi julie,

just like leilani...you can grow just about anything, but you might have to bring in some soil since topsoil is marginal in most areas....you can build garden beds like everyone does or put plants in various holes with soil added.

have fun....

I think John showed me a place in Nanawale. Every subdivision in Puna has nice patches and rough patches. Overall, I thought Nanawale was pretty nice...Beaches, HSRE.....Puna overall is "coming up". Gotta know your neighbors, and as John once pointed out, who your neighbors are several lots away as well!

Our place is closest to Seaview (it's Nanawale Farm Lots) and Seaview looks really nice from the car. But my son reported that walking or bike riding down that street meant constant harrassment from loose dogs. And I was so looking forward to biking. Anyone have comments on biking in Nanawale?

Thanks for all the replys.

Likalizard-nice to meet a potential neighbor! I won't be moving for a few years still however. Don't you feel guilty about clearing the whole lot? I feel like I should do as little removal of the jungle feel, meaning, we need trees and plants to fight the global warming and for general conservation reasons. So, not sure how to do this. I want to put a house, and a garden, while keeping as many of the original Ohia trees, etc. as I can. So, I am confused I guess as to what to do.
Anyway, as far as moving, I dunno about that. I was thinking in a few years, but I may wander around the world a bit first as I haven't been able to do that yet. Anyway, will keep in touch-I am envious that you will be there soon.
