So...rat lung and all.
Somehow our bamboo cutting board was left outside and when found had a big fat nasty slug on it.
My wife is pretty freaked out and we're wondering if it just needs to be re purposed away from food consumption, or would a simple soapy scrub take care of the issue?
Normally I'd think washing it off would take care of any issue but my wife suggested that since it was bamboo perhaps the "goo" could have sunk into the wood somehow.
I'd rather not buy a new cutting board so curious what everyone else would do...besides not leaving their cutting boards outside anymore ! : )

Washing with soap and water should be enough.
If you think you should do more,you could put in a freezer for a few days.

Or give it a soak with some bleach.

Pick up cutting board, close eyes, throw cutting board as far you can into bushes and never think about it again. Wash hands.

Spray bleach in place, flipping board over with a stick as you go. Then, throw the board into your "scrap bin", to be cut down into some future project, like a termite/rot barrier where the post meets the pier.
I read somewhere that only the banana slugs (native to mid-coastal CA, as in "Santa Cruz") are rat lungworm host/carriers, disease was present on-island but hardly a problem until the banana slugs arrived.

Heat treat it at about 1500 degrees for about an hour, should kill off any parasites...

All this ^^^^ makes me think burn it.
If u buy some fruit @ hilo farmers market or any, can u eat a banana or papaya or whateves on the way home or are u risking to much?

A banana should be safe to eat. It comes in it's own wrapper after all. Papaya should be too if you don't eat the skin.

I sure hope most of you are joking. We'd all be dead already if the stuff was that bad. Just wash it. Pour some bleach or boiling water on it if you feel you must. It's cheap and easy.
If the risk were so great that a washed and bleached cutting board were unsafe then the whole concept of gardening or the eating of any produce would be out the window.

OMG!!!!!!!!!! A slug? Really? Really???????? What would you do if you didn't see the slug yet the night you left it out 50 big NASTY FAT slugs slimmed all over your fork? Come on...
I hope you got your helmet on and fire proof pajama's with built in knee pads and elbow pads. I mean... I saw ten huge roaches today... Must be mating time or something. I guess I can see the centipede posts but now slugs? Uh... County Water will kill rat lung worm ... I would think some soap and water would be ok that is if the slug was cruising though rat dung before it got to your cutting board.
Tho on a side note ... putting your cutting board in the microwave may not be such a bad idea. I do it with my sponges... Sterilization is a good thing.
