Which Satellite internet service do you use??

After going on line and finding satellite internet services and then phoning only to find they have no Hawaii service I will ask who has which and how fast and how good.

We considered and rejected satellite internet service due to the high startup cost (over $1000), large dish antenna required (satellite only marginally focused on islands) and some concerns about reliability and the satellite "lag" time affecting reception. The per-month charge was also steep as I remember.

We finally got the Verizon wireless card for our Mac laptop. It works through the cell towers and has proved to be quite reliable. It operates at 144 kbps and is noticeably quicker than dialup though definitely not cable or DSL speed. It doesn't really support video for instance but general surfing is no problem and I can update our web site with lots of images with just a small amount of patience. There are faster capabilities available in some mainland cities, so hopefully Verizon will upgrade locally some day. It can also connect our desktop Mac with the internet sharing feature of the MacOS. Being off grid we didn't think we had much choice but this has been quite satisfactory for our situation.

unless things have changed recently Larry, satellite service here on the Big Island is rather sluggish. I'm pretty sure where you live DSL & cable are both there. Contact Oceanic cable for cable & Hawaiian tel for DSL both of them are way faster than satellite here..

I have "starband" mainland at my off the grid (read no cell service) place ... start up cost is high, support non existent, speeds are ok ... signal lag time is a pain for vonnage however voice and vpn are not supported - worst of all - they close up shop 5pm eastern time if you have issues.. I also seem to need a new "upgraded" modem every couple of years because of power supply failures - at $200 - 250 a pop

here in the acres (and on the road) I am very pleased with the verizon usb aircard for my laptop
