Funny thing about industrial hemp: it's still considered a Schedule I narcotic despite having nearly 0% THC, and DuPont is often cited as the conspiracy behind this, because hemp makes better/cheaper paper, plastic, etc.

What is this fiber that the Hawaiians used?

"The word canvas is a distortion of the Dutch word for cannabis."

That's definitely not true (it is from cannabis but not from Dutch) but I too am curious what this miracle fiber was.

just think of it...big island, former sugar cane land, lots of it, now planted in hemp for the production of bio-fuel (some consider this the best plant in the world for this type of production) assisting in our effort to get off of imported oil! i like it!

The cordage plant is olona (kahako on the a), Touchardia latifolia, in the nettle family. The fiber was the scraped inner bark. Olona was considered significantly stronger than hemp.

But does the olona grow mad like a weed?

Im sure it grows great and appears to be a superior product to both hemp and manila when it comes to cordage. I would love to grow some, maybe I already am?
