There are many advantages of practicing private doctors, and we get many facilities also. I prefer to one of the doctor in California, ans don't have that much idea about the doctors in Hilo/Puna.

I was told that Kaiser was the only way to get a doctor, so that's why I bought that. I was told to take my kids to "BayClinic" and they are accepting patients.

I like Kaiser (but we pay our monthly fees out of pocket) for many reasons. But, both my Wife's Doctor, and my Doctor quit. I think both are still working on the Big Island.

The "clinic's" in Hilo/Puna will take anybody including walk-in's. For walk-in's it's best to get there an hour or two before they open so you have a chance to see someone. If you make an appointment...it could be a month or longer wait. There is also a high turnover rate of doctors at clinic's. They never seem to stay more than a couple of years before either moving to a private practice or moving off island.

The Pahoa clinic in Malama Market has always seen me within 20 minutes of walking in, I have been treated by one of the same two people every time since they opened. I am pretty sure the Bay Clinic has more turn over, and yes, the Bay Clinic can make you wait months for an appointment.

All the Kaiser docs are "rentadocs". They just come for a certain contracted period of time, like a year or two. This was what I was told when I asked 6 mo ago.

Same experience. My job just went to Kaiser. I tried to get a PCP and there's only 1 available in E. Hawai'i - a pediatrician. Not that there's anything wrong with that. I was just hoping for an actual choice.
My experience so far of KP has been far less than satisfactory (I've had more experience than the above...). I'd much prefer HMSA, personally. It's my belief that part of personal care is developing a relationship with your doctor. Rent-A-Doc's just don't cut it, no matter how nice, or insanely talented, or whatever... they are.

Not true that all Kaiser doctors are temporary. I have been with
Dr Hu for 12 years.

I've been with Dr. Hu for several years, too.
But other doctors sure come and go at Kaiser. I just did a quick count; I've seen at least 31 different doctors at Kaiser. That does include specialists and docs on Oahu, but a lot of them were short-termers at Hilo.
One doc told me he worked back east, and came here for just a week. I got the impression that it was tied to his vacation--get paid AND write off the trip.

I saw an ad in the paper for a new female doctor in Hilo taking new patients. Did anyone notice who that was. Also any current recommendations would be appreciated for other doctors who take HMSA.
