My 13 yr old has an all over rash and his cheeks are swollen. He is fully vaccinated, but when I look at photos, it really does appear to me that it could possibly be mumps?? IS this possible? Have any other kids in the area come down with a rash like this? So far, me and the other kids are not catching it, but we are vaccinated also. I am waiting for it to run it's course, but if it does not then I'll take him in to the doctor. They usually cant do much for rashes, so that's why I'm waiting and just giving him benadryl at home.

I think they're immune after they get this once and my kids had that years ago. This is a itchy vesicular rash with extreme cheek swelling.

The rash it looking a bit better, but his face is so swollen still that he cant go anywhere. It's his neck and cheeks, but I guess maybe it could be 5ths disease although his rash looks worse than the photos of that. I'm sure we already had this, but who knows. Maybe this is a different strain or something. I have no clue and that's why I posted. Thanks for the info about 5th's.

I hope you are quarantining your family until you either know what it is, or know for sure it is no longer contagious.
My mom didn't realize I had mumps when I was 5 and sent me to a birthday party, where I promptly exposed 30+ kids and adults, one of whom had severe complications and almost died. This was before there was a vaccine for mumps, but I just saw some research on how teens are starting to get some of the childhood diseases that they were vaccinated against as very young children. Apparently around 5-10% of kids "outgrow" some of the immunities to certain diseases right around puberty, I can't remember which ones though. Hawaii has so many visitors from all over that is very possible to get exposed to something that isn't commonly in the local "ecosystem" of kid spread diseases.

yes, they are quarantined, but I was reading that by the time the rash appears they are probably not contagious anymore. This is my son's 2nd day of the bad rash and swollen face. I'm waiting to see if the rest of the family gets it. It's spring break at least.

Did he eat fresh mango recently? Some folks have a nasty reaction to mango. It's the sap found in the skin. A neighbor helped peel mangos and got a rash on every part of his body he had touched and his mouth was a mess.

I dont think it's an allergy- unless systemic hives- because it's really all over him. He's been taking benadryl for 2 days now, with no real improvement, so this also makes me think it's not an allergy. Anyhow, I'll see how he looks tomorrow. The rest of us arent sick..... yet.... HE has one specific painful part and it's the exact part on the diagram where they say that the mumps strikes. HE pretty much looks like a chipmunk. HIs eyes were almost swollen shut earlier but are looking better now.

My daughter got a really bad case of cat scratch fever; thought it was only a song before the doc said that's what it was.
