If you go to maps.google.com and type in Kulani Hilo Hawaii

A large "structure" comes up in a weird shape...

WHAT on earth is that? I can't tell and am intrigued.

It used to be the prison but Gov. Lingle shut it down, now it is a "boot camp" for drop outs who need a fast track to a high school dipoma, and it will probably be turned back into a prison in the next year or so.

If you're talking about the thing to the left of where the marker puts you, mauka of the prison buildings, it's a water catchment. The trapezoidal area is a paved surface that's the actual catchment, and right below that is a rectangular reservoir. At Puu Waawaa, just above and left of where this link takes you, is a similar but much more extensive one (now in disrepair).
