Looks like HELCO is treating us to a spate of 10-second power failures again today. Have already had to set the stove clock twice this morning. We had a couple of these the other day just before the geothermal plant tripped off line. Hope they're better prepared today.
Today is the oldest you've ever been and the youngest you'll ever be, enjoy this day!

Yeah, too bad it's so "expensive" and "inconvenient" to go off-grid.

It's really not all that expensive ... considering you can buy 230 watt panels for about 200 a pop. Most people can live off of 4-8 of them comfortably.
Then all you need is some cables, hardware, batteries, charger and a inverter. Dunno where you live Lin, but beaches sub hasn't gone off since the geo plant tripped.

If anyone is concerned about Computers/TV's or other expensive electronic equipment sensitive to power fluctuations...
Just a little FYI, I got this off of Amazon recently for 75 bucks.

Looked at this on Amazon, says they won't ship to Hawaii. Where are you?

Batteries cannot be shipped "air", and Amazon doesn't have a way to do "freight".
Alternate solution: lash together an inverter, some batteries, and a float charger; this is approximately an "on-line UPS", and all the pieces are available at WalMart.

450 watt model might not be strong enough.
The do have, I think a 1200 watt? model at Costco for a good price.

sorry, I got a similar item off of ebay just not too long ago. Figured Amazon would ship it. OfficeMax or Sears sells them as well. APC isn't a bad brand to go with. Just make sure they have batteries you can change out. Walmart sells this same item for the same price. Dunno if they will ship it or not. There are tons of UPS brands .. You can roll your own.
I just buy most of my crap of amazon so I assumed they would ship it.
