Any other big island kids have rashes right now?

Vaccines aren't 100% effective; for mumps I think it's something like 98% but that still leaves 1/50 vaccinated people potentially able to get it, and I bet there are a lot of anti-vaccine people in Puna. That's why it's important for everyone to be vaccinated in order to eliminate the disease.

Allergies would be all over as well. Does he have a fever and otherwise is sick? If so that would point more to mumps, if not then to some kind of allergy.

WEll,he's not worse, and the rest of us dont have it, so we are still waiting for the rash to abate. I'll let everyone know if someone else gets it, or I really find out what it is. I've had hives before and I never did find out what it was from, so these things are often a mystery.

Had/has he taken any kind of medication? There is a rare but very serious condition (Stevens-Johnson syndrome) that can be caused by an allergic reaction to various drugs (including common things like ibuprofen) or infections. It would cause a blotchy red rash on the body almost always with sores in the mouth and around the eyes (inside the eyelids).

I would take him to the doctor, if his neck and cheeks are so sweollen, my worry would be that his airway could become constricted.

The swelling is almost gone and rash is much better. It could possibly be a bad case of 5th's disease, since evidently this is going around. He didnt have any wheezing and the swelling was mostly his cheeks. Wierd to say the least! I'm still waiting to see if the rust of us are stricken with the malady. I will let other's know if this happens and if we find out what it is!

I don't know where you live, but in Lower Puna we have had awful vog for 10 days or so. I see it has been blowing towards Waimea as well on a couple of days. In Puna we also had H2S released from a blow out at the geothermal plant on they said the 13th but friends smelled sulfur, rotton egg smell, on the 12th. I am very allergic to sulfa drugs and have reactions to sulfites and sulfates, which is what your body turns vog into. My face broke out like a teenagers with acne and I had hives on my chest and back. So maybe your child had a reaction to that? Just a thought.

WEll, thought I'd report back. I had a fever for one day with no rash. The other kids had a mild cold and no rash. I think it was something contagious, but unfortunately I still have no idea what it was! Sorry I dont have any more info, and I hope I didnt cause anyone undue worry.

Popping this to the top again as a heads-up, as several students in Puna have been diagnosed lately with Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease. (Somewhat different symptoms from the OP's child, but this seemed to be the most closely-related thread.)

Wash, wash, wash, wash, wash, wash, wash....
...and keep the kids home if they get it!

Thanks!

One of my son's did not appear to get a rash at the time, but now has a faded rash that has been there for a couple weeks now. His rash does not itch like my older son's. I think in retrospect that maybe this was indeed what we had, just sort of a strange presentation. I thought we'd all had this before, but evidently we hadnt!
