I have yet to figure out the exact variables, but it seems that bachelor's degrees are valued for a lot of jobs I've looked for. I happened to end up (weird story) in a class within one week of getting off the plane that trained me for a state job. I didnt breathe a word of how I got into that class, because I was in with several people who said it had taken them "several years to get into the class". I just pretended I knew what "slippers" meant and "auntie" even though I had absolutely no clue! Fast forward. I then went to work as a substitute worker, and I just take any shift any job- and I just smile and do a very consientious job and then I hopefully get asked back! If you get in at the medical center, I've heard stories of nurses working 5 yrs on nights and still not being given a dayshift job. I think it may be pretty hard to be accepted in the "inner circle" there, but who knows. Part of it is being open and having a good attitude and working hard. GL!

If you can get a CDL or ASE certification,you can usually get a job as long as you can pass a drug test.
Ad's running in the Trib all the time.
No one can pass a drug test for these jobs !!

sputnut - it might help if you briefly describe any qualifications or experience you have in any particular area, or what you'd like to do. A decent employer would also ask you these questions before hiring you so probably best to filter things now rather than later.

Probably it would help Sputnut to look at many of employers here (wellll not soo many in Puna....but there are a few)... most island & some Puna have on-line presence....

If someone is asking about job opportunities but doesn't say anything about their experience or qualifications or what area they are looking for a job in then I suspect they're likely to get less than useful advice. I wasn't asking for a resume, just what area they have qualifications or experience in and what they want to do. You can do that in a public forum without giving up your identity.
Seriously, would you prefer to help someone who just says "I need a job" or "I'm looking for a job in Puna and I have a background in electronics"?

just trying to "feel out" the job situation in that area. We aren't accustomed to much, I can tell you that. I have plenty of experience in several facets of the food industry, from fast food to fine dining as a line / prep cook. Also 5 years as a meat cutter, the last 2 and a half managing a meat dept. I worked about 5 years in the construction / remodeling area as well. Not real fond of that now that I'm in my mid 40's, though. Also, the last 10 years I have owned and operated my own business mostly cleaning windows and pressurewashing with some other interior and exterior cleaning jobs thrown in. does that help narrow it down?

I think there's a fairly large beef industry here but it's up in Waimea. Not sure how all those cattle are slaughtered, but there might be some opportunities there. Maybe someone else knows more about this. I always buy the local beef because I figure it must be a smallish operation seeing as the island is fairly compact.

I moved here a year ago and have applied at least 40 jobs since i moved here and have yet to get even an interview. Previously I worked as a design engineer in Seattle with a high salary. I've applied for all sorts of jobs high and low paying but no luck. I figure work sucks any how so i give up.

I think most of the cattle are shipped off island for growing out and slaughtering, except maybe for local consumption.
