Even Hilo has had their share of murders lately. Of course Puna is going to have a higher rate of crime, but it's not just Nanawale that has had this problem as others have stated. This is a very low income area. Higher crime and low income areas usually go together.
I live in Nanawale and I like it. I also live towards the back, so I have some more privacy compared to the houses at the front.
And not that this necessarily makes it any better, but the with the murders, it seems that in most of them the victim and the suspect know each other. It's not as if there is a killer on the loose terrorizing random people. If you get involved with shady people, you are literally playing with your life.

Last night I tried to post about Nanawale since I am a resident of this beautiful subdivision. I couldn't find the words! But this post expresses my sentiments perfectly. I retired and moved here 18 months ago and I still love the place. I love my neighbors. My church is so close by, I could walk if I needed to. Pahoa is conveniently close. The ocean is only 8 miles away. Lava Tree State Park is beautiful and only a couple miles away. I walk these streets.
Ironically, I didn't walk Maui Road because there were loose dogs and alot of closely placed homes on the section that had the shooting. But most of the streets have friendly, responsible people.
I am saddened we take claim to three murders in 6 years. I am sad for the families affected by this recent death. But, these things happen when uncontrolled anger occurs and it can happen anywhere.

When I told a friend is was moving to the Big Island from Maui in 1999, her first response was, "I hope it's not the Puna District!" I told her it was, but that Puna was as large as the entire island of Maui, or Oahu, and there are a lot of different areas within the district. She didn't buy it, probably for the same reason KITV will lump all of Nanawale together, or when Dog the Bounty Hunter came over to Puna and acted like he was gonna get jumped by a crack head hiding behind every tree. Puna has good subdivisions, and each subdivision has good and not so good areas.

Our "little grass shack" is also in Nanawale and we love it!
Yes the lot size is small but it's just right for us.

Yes it is sad and for the most part it seems like the people getting killed are friends with the killers. I guess that makes me feel a little safer as I don't hang with those people. Are there many lab houses? Seems to me that getting all the chems to set up a lab operation would be rather difficult, but I could be wrong.

Paul-HPP has 4500 homes on 12 SQ miles and 8,830 1 acre lots.
About 11,000 residents...it's bigger then Kona.

Hi Scott - I know! But I assume we're talking crime *rate* here.
Otherwise you could say there's more crime in Tokyo than Honolulu.
I feel very very safe in HPP.
