Do you really remember the Volcano House from many, many years ago? Honestly, you are the first person I've heard outside of tourists who have anything positive to say about the interior design. Sterile is the word. The paintings are supposed to go in the Ohia Wing which is supposed to be a museum. But no one seems to know where the paintings are. All the old koa furniture was stolen by the former lessee who backed up to V House with a semi and removed all the koa rockers and the large koa table that was in the great room. The effing fire should have been relit as soon as possible. It should never have been allowed to go out. There is GD Southwestern jewelry in the gift shops because the Ortega family wants to move merchandise. It really is all wrong. And don't get me started on the Park supervisor who is making everyone miserable for reasons of her own. At least the bar area is nice.
And why was a crew of Roumanians (not that I have anything against Roumanians) brought in from Arizona when so many local arisans are looking for work? Really messed up.

sorry, Jackson. I'm not local .... only been here under 2 years. But it took me back in time...that is what I felt. Didn't know about the paintings. I'm sorry it has lost it heritage and I'll be silent.

I'm sorry Nana Valley. I wasn't berating you in any way at all. I was just curious as you are the only one I have heard who likes it and I was wondering what you saw in it. What I used to love was that it WAS a step back in time. But sheesh the furniture looks like it's from Ross and there are photographs of the paintings on the instiutional like walls. And really, that jewelry.
But if you heard frustation from me it is certainly not directed at you but at V House. I'm sorry.

wow, when I was there about 6 months ago, I figured they would never reopen it. Looks like a huge improvement from the pictures.

Anyone try Breakfast Buffet? Doesn't look bad for 15 bucks. I've only eaten up there a few times and the dinner buffet wasn't bad. Would be kinda nice to get up their early, eat and walk it off in the park.

September 28, 2013 (National Public Lands Day)
November 9-11, 2013 (Veterans Day weekend)

Park entrance fees, commercial tour fees, and transportation entrance fees will be waived on these days.

We enjoyed our anniversary dinner at The Rim last night. The food and service was good. We made reservations and had a nice view of the crater from our table. True, it is not the same as in years gone by, but is is nice to see the place reopened. They do have a keike menu with prices between $7 (pasta)and $12 (fish).
I had the steak and crab combo ($39), hubby had the steak of the day ($32). I like that they are using local ingredients. It would be nice to see that fireplace lit again,some live dinner music added, the decore warmed up somehow. On the other hand, they did have linen napkins and tablecloths, fresh flowers on the table, and the view of the crater makes for pretty spectacular dinner entertainment.
