Pahoated and Paul - are you sure you weren't seeing cached versions of the links you gave? I tried both earlier today and still got a 503 error. Interestingly, I was able to get to the BIC for a short while this evening but now it's 403 as Midnight Rambler reports. Seems as though something is being worked on I guess.

Thank you all for your interest and concern, whether you admit to being a regular follower or not.

So, obviously Pahoa Ted is pretty well versed on this stuff...

My webmaster Bruce Albrecht's real job is managing fireworks displays, and he was pretty busy late last week when the hosting service notified him late last week of some issues. And yes it has to do with some predatorial-like requests... Pahoa Ted might understand this message... "We have been reviewing the traffic logs for your site for the time leading up to the suspension and we see that in the hour prior to the suspension your site received over 2400 requests for the file xmlrpc.php from the following three IP addresses..."

"It appears that this was an attempt to either post lots of span to your site or else to just bring the site down. We have now blocked these IPs from accessing your site..."

And now Bruce is making recommended changes to optimize BIC. I don't want to give any false promises as to when all the changes will be made and the site will be up and running.

I have plenty of content to upload, considering I just sent my one-year anniversary print edition to the printer... So, I'm chomping at the bit to get the website up and running again.

Thanks for your patience and understanding, and again, thanks for your interest and concern, posting a topic here. FYI, I don't follow PUNAWEB, I only visit here when someone brings a topic to my attention. If you ever have any questions or comments about my newspapering, including my website and print version, or my style of journalism, or you have a story idea, etc., you can feel free to email me at newswoman@me.com, or you can call me at (808) 938-8592.

Thank you.

Well my suggestion here is to "round up the usual suspects!"

Seriously, I do sympathize with Tiffany greatly. It is ashamed people would stoop to levels such as this.

If anything, it speaks for her determination, her contributions to this community, as well as her journalistic style.

As we see here, with her site knocked down, some people just hate it! And as Ted points out, there are quite a few characters who post on Tiffany’s site!

I wonder if anything can be gleaned from the three IP addresses, although my experience with these asswipes who do this type of thing is that they hide behind proxy servers while at the same time become outraged at those who desire to be anonymous for various valid reasons.

There are TONS of exploit hack bots in the wild, assigning blame to posters you disagree with is the least likely suspect. I advise you to gander at some web security sites linked below to scratch the surface of internet crime and how wide spread and out of control it is.

Thanks everyone for your patience.

As many of you are aware, the Big Island Chronicle website is essentially a two-person operation. Tiffany does most all the work (and deserves all the credit); I just help her out a bit behind the scenes to keep things running smoothly–most of the time.

On July 3rd at approximately 2 pm, I received a call from our service provider indicating there was an issue with the website and they had to take action before it crashed the computer. That action was, unfortunately, to disable access before it affected their other customers. The problem was most likely caused by malicious software trying to turn the BIC into a spam machine. Even more unfortunate was the fact that I received this support call whilst standing on a cliff south of Nanakuli working on a 4 day production (my “day job”). To make matters worse, the condo where I was staying had horrible cellular coverage, negating any work on the site until I returned home.

So I apologize for the length of the outage, and just ask for your understanding. Hopefully we have the problem fixed and we can all go back to appreciating the hard work that Tiffany devotes to this site.

Mahalo,

Bruce

Thanks to everyone for answering my question about the BIC site. Good to know it'll be back. Although I have some issues with the content and the nature of the journalism there it is still a valuable resource for Puna.

If it's any help, my anti-virus software went nuts whenever I went to the BIC. Because I have a slow connection it was fairly clear at what stage they were triggered - it was some of the advertisements on the right hand sidebar. Went to the BIC right now and still got those warnings although the site seems to be up, but again one or two of the adverts got my anti-virus software interested.

Just visited the BIC now and no longer get all the warnings about viruses (viri?), so clearly something has been done to clean up the site. Good job!
