Based on my layman interpretation of the above referenced law, you are not required to retreat from your home or place of work.

Edited for typo.

Keep gate closed, add some chimes or bells to it.
Get a dog (early alert gives you time to react)
Keep wasp/pepper spray by the doors
Have an Loud Sports type AIR horn ready to alert your neighbors of danger
Have an exit plan out the back that all your family knows
Organize your neighbors to listen for an air horn alert.
Form a Neighborhood Watch to watch for unfamiliar vehicles and a phone tree to let them know ASAP.
If you get mad before getting scared a can of beans can do wonders.
Install Game type cameras around the outside (hidden)

Out the back and into what situation?
Your home is where you run to for safety, not where you run from.

Better than nothing. I have an antique S&W police 12G pump just inside the door. 1st round is a bean bag, 2nd is birdshot(#6), 3rd & 4th are 00 Buck.

been there done that - its Hawaii - base ball bat or nine iron - right tool for the job - no need to escalate... imho

I like shot followed by slug - 18" swings through a sailboat hatch nicely - shot clears the vessel - does not sink it - slug puts an end to any "normal" mechanical threat. handy asset to have on the road.

stainless does well wrapped in oil cloth in humid conditions

If you have a car alarm that has a key fob with a panic button, you can press it at the first sign of a break in. It may not get your neighbors to jump to immediate action - - but burglars don't like noise so it may scare them off.

Problem with Hawaii Castle law is that it protects homeowner/resident from civil liability but not criminal liability.

This kind of crap will never change in a state where the voter litmus test seems to be support for medical marijuana codes instead of the freedoms enumerated in the Bill of Rights. There many people who even though they were borne in Hawaii will not live in a state with idiotic laws that prevent self defense in one's one home. They moved.

I would guess that if there was some super GMO strain of Marijuana developed that resulted in a super potent THC content, GMO corporations would have absolutely no problems planting anything over here.

Stop voting for idiot State reps!

have a look at this 22" bat .... I add a wrist lanyard so it cant be wrestled away .... and hang it on the back of the front door

Good for stray aggressive behavior modification as well, one can drill into the end and add weight to "customize" the bat

I don't see these two issues as being mutually exclusive. Both are about freedom and rights. You must have a really low opinion of medical cannabis and it's users to say something like that.

Given the severity and relative frequency of burglaries and home invasions taking place in Puna, I certainly wish our elected officials would take it upon themselves to revisit the firearms laws at it relates to shooting someone who has illegally entered your place of residence. As the law currently stands, you must try your best to escape from your OWN home if something like this happens...OR you must prove that your life was threatened. With food production, small business, and gmo battles decorating Russell's plate, I don't see him making any tough decisions on crime in Puna. Hanohano? Probably not.

In the meantime, criminals will still have the upper hand in Puna. I'm not for killing folks. I'm really not. But if someone enters my house...with intent to steal from and/or hurt my family. I'm putt'n the red dot right between his/her (bleeping) eyes. But that's just me. And I'd probably go to jail for it. Legal as my sig might be.
