So why is a meeting about Orchidland's roads being held at a church in HPP? Don't you guys have any sort of a meeting room there?

If not, what about the Ainaloa longhouse? Seems like that might be closer for some folks and they wouldn't have to cross the highway.

Orchidland doesn't have its own meeting room - we don't have enough money for roads, let alone a meeting room. Meetings are usually held at the HPP and Ainaloa longhouse, but I'm guessing that both were booked on this short notice.

Terracore, the association has just implemented a new collections policy, and as I recall 70% of the membership is now paying their road fees - so progress is being made. At the last meeting, the Board reported that current fees are barely sufficient to keep our roads in their current awful condition. Lots of money is spent patching deteriorating chipseal roads that really should have been paved years ago. And potholes on gravel roads are patched with gravel that washes away after a few downpours. And as most folks know, no tax revenues are available for fixing our "privately owned public roads."

I know there is a long history to this, but let's just get it done right and then all of our property values will go up. There is tons of bulldozing/building going on in Orchidland right now. I know a lot of people still don't pay, but as things improve, maybe they will get on board and feel like their money will "count" for something good. There will always be people who try and avoid paying, but it sounds like more and more people are starting to buy into the idea of improving the roads. It's never going to be perfect, and we shouldn't wait around for this impossibility. Let's just work with what we have, and do something positive!,

Well, I like my road just fine. Our side of 40th is pretty nice. Many folks on our end of the street do a lot of road work on their own time with their own money.

As far as increasing the value of the property, I don't want that either. lol I plan on living in this house till I die, and if the value goes up so does my taxes.

The officials who have the money and power to pave roads and do other upgrades aren't interested in the Puna subdivisions right now. But, there is money and power to get other things done. For example, the upgrading of the highway and the build-out and new road exchanges in Pahoa. Someday, someone with the money and power, i.e., the developers, will come and improve our subs. Until then, let's not waste our time, money and energy trying to accomplish something on our own.

My side of 39th is in pretty bad shape and should at least be graded. That area at the top of Pohaku could also be greatly improved.

Who said that? I've not read that anywhere.

"The president, who felt anything less than the full $300 option was disrespecting those who were promised their streets would be paved years ago, resigned in protest, and the meeting -- which had been as contentious as usual -- spriraled into chaos." (KeaauRich)

Before agreeing to a doubling of our fees, I would hope some sort of concrete business plan would be presented detailing where the money would be spent and by when. We need something more than promises from an organization that has a difficult time conducting business meetings civily. How about a detailed bid from the contractor: detailed material and labor costs?

Regarding communication from the Association, why are they still using snail-mail as the only means? Mass emailing should certainly be cheaper, with exceptions for those who prefer hard copies.
Again, mahalo Rich for sharing this.
